Electric Audi E-Tron GT Shown Ahead of 2020 Arrival

A design sketch for the electric Audi e-tron GT has been released by the German automaker ahead of its arrival in 2020.

The e-tron GT will be a “highly dynamic” electric four-door that will put the Tesla Model S, and other luxury sedans, directly in its crosshairs. It will ride on Volkswagen Group’s new platform for sporty electric vehicles, which is called J1 and will debut in the Porsche Mission E next year.

In a statement, Audi chairman Rupert Stadler said the e-tron GT is indicative of the direction the Audi Sport will take going forward.

“We interpret sportiness very progressively with our fully electric e-tron GT, and this is how we will take our high-performance brand Audi Sport into the future,” he said.

Nothing is known about the e-tron GT’s powertrain, but the heavily related Mission E has been rumored to make as much as 600 hp in its range-topping form. The Audi probably won’t be as sport-inspired as the Porsche, but it will still be a very high-performance offering.

The e-tron GT will be built at Audi’s Neckarsulm plant in Germany, which currently builds the A4, A5, A6, A7 and A8. Plant tooling for the electric four-door should begin sooner rather than later, with Audi hoping to put the e-tron GT on sale in just two years. The heavily related Porsche Mission E is expected to go on sale next year.

The e-tron GT is one of 20 electrified models that Audi will be introduced between now and 2025. Additionally, mild-hybrid powertrains will be available in all core Audi models going forward, Stadler revealed – in line with rival Mercedes-Benz, which will eventually offer 48V technology in nearly every one of its vehicles.

We’re expecting rumors and information on the electric Audi e-tron GT to trickle out between now and its 2020 arrival, so stay tuned for more information on this high-performance EV.
