Jeep Wrangler Recalls Over the Years: Is Your Model Affected?

FCA’s iconic off-roader has had a number of important recalls during its production run.

Thanks to extensive data from NHTSA, we have compiled a list of recalls for this popular model. Data from the NHTSA is available for the first generation of the Jeep Wrangler (YJ) all the way up to the current JL (fourth generation). Here is all the available information on Jeep Wrangler recalls:

Coming in only a 2-door configuration, a total of twenty-six recalls were issued for these two generations:

1.) Amber Side Reflex Reflectors (Issued March 2006); Models affected: 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994 2-door, 1995 2-door, 1996 2-door, 1997 2-door, 1998, 1999 2-door, 2000 2-door, 2001 2-door, 2002 2-door, 2003 2-door models

2.) Brake Hydraulic Master Cylinder (Issued March 2006); Models affected: 1997 2-door, 1998, 1999 2-door, 2000 2-door, 2001 2-door, 2002 2-door, 2003, 2004, 2005 2-door models

-In the presence of an ignition source, a fuel leak could result in a fire.

-In the event of a crash, the child seat may not be properly attached increasing the risk of injury to the child.

-In the event of a vehicle crash, the air bag may not deploy increasing the risk of serious injury to the occupant.

-Unexpected air bag deployment can result in occupant injury.

Jeep Wrangler Recalls (JK)

Along with a traditional 2-door model, a 4-door model in Unlimited trim was also released and twenty-six recalls in total were issued for this generation.

1.) Passenger Frontal Air Bag Inflator May Explode (Issued January 2018); Models affected: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 models

-An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

2.) Passenger Frontal Air Bag Inflator May Rupture (Issued May 2016); Models affected: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 models

-These vehicles are equipped with certain airbag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. These inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity temperature cycling. An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

3.) Clockspring Assembly May Become Contaminated (Issued May 2016); Models affected: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 models

4.) Air Bag Clockspring Assemblies May Fail (Issued May 2013); Models affected: 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 models

5.) Floor Liner Tearing May Lead to Pedal Entrapment (Issued February 2013); Models affected: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 , 2013 models

-If the liner shifts forward it may impede the operation of the accelerator and possibly lead to unintended acceleration, which may increase the risk of a crash.

-In the event of a crash, the driver’s airbag may not properly inflate and may not be able to properly protect an occupant, increasing the risk of injuries.

9.) Automatic Transmission Skid Plate (Issued May 2012); Models affected: 2010 models

-A missing or incorrectly installed rivet could compromise the ability of the steering column to support the occupant loads in the event of a frontal crash, decreasing the effectiveness of the frontal impact safety system. As a result, the condition may increase the potential for injury in a frontal crash.
