Once upon a time, Richard Hammond introduced us to the Mercedes-AMG G63 6×6 on Top Gear.
Now one of his successors on the BBC motoring show, Matt LeBlanc, has introduced us to something even bigger and with even more wheels – the Avtoros Shaman 8×8.
The Avtoros Shaman is a Russian creation intended for low-speed off-roading. It features a four-cylinder 3.0-liter diesel engine built by Italian commercial vehicle maker Iveco, a six-speed manual transmission, and of course, eight-wheel drive. It’s not very fast, with the 146 hp diesel motivating it to a top speed of just 44 mph, but it’s virtually unstoppable off-road. It can even navigate deep water at a speed of 1.2 mph and travel sideways thanks to eight-wheel steering – something Avotoros calls ‘Crab Mode’. If you can think of an obstacle, the Shaman can probably overcome it with ease.
The Shaman starts at about $212,000 USD before options, and Atvoros even has a configurator on their website with full pricing details if you want to design your own. We’ll be honest, after playing around with the configurator, we’d opt for a Shaman over a G63 6×6 any day of the week. Shame it’s only available in white or orange, though.
You can watch LeBlanc sample the Shaman’s off-road capabilities and give us a tour of its military-grade interior (which even includes a McLaren F1-style central driving position) in the video embedded above.
