The next generation of Volvo infotainment systems will feature Google Play Store, Google Maps, and Google Assistant, allowing it all to be controlled vocally.

The move should be a relatively simple one since Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system is already Android-based. This will increase the number of apps and functions drivers have access to, though.

“Bringing Google services into Volvo cars will accelerate innovation in connectivity and boost our development in applications and connected services,” said Henrik Green, senior VP of R&D at Volvo. “Soon, Volvo drivers will have direct access to thousands of in-car apps that make daily life easier and the connected in-car experience more enjoyable.”

Through the Google Play Store, drivers will have access to a wide range of vehicle-specific apps, while Volvo argues that Google Maps’ constantly updated catalog of the world’s roads will improve its navigation function.

Finally, Google Assistant will you not only operate those apps touchlessly, but many of the vehicle’s functions, too. Air conditioning, messaging, and music will all be operable through Google Assistant.

“The Google partnership to be entered into is an important strategic alliance for Volvo Cars,” adds Green. “The Android platform, Google services and Google’s working relationship with app developers in-house and worldwide will help us further improve the Volvo car experience.”
