Tesla Could Have a Compact Within Five Years

If Tesla CEO Elon Musk has his way, an all-electric compact model could arrive within five years.

Speaking at the automaker’s annual shareholder meeting, Musk was asked about smaller segments Tesla could expand on. He replied saying, “I think we’ll do a compact car in less than five years,” although no further details were given. He didn’t answer another part of the question on whether a subcompact, B-segment car would be made, suggesting Tesla likely wouldn’t go smaller than the compact segment in the next five years.

But before the compact arrives, the Model Y will be unveiled on March 15, 2019 before production starts in the first half of 2020.

As for the rest of the projects Tesla is working on, it sounds like the Tesla Semi is getting a revision so that the truck fits in with legislations all around the world. Musk continues to claim the Tesla Semi’s range will be “way beyond what most people in the industry think is possible.” In addition, the Roadster, which was unveiled at the same time as the Semi, will get improvements as well. The prototype Musk brought on stage, that has a 1.9-second zero-to-60 mph time, is actually the entry-level model. A performance version “with a SpaceX option package” will sit at the top of the Roadster’s range.

All of this could be moot however, if Tesla isn’t able to ramp up production for the Model 3 and start turning a profit.

Maybe the company that buys the Tesla technology after bankruptcy will build a compact and subcompact, lol.
