Potential BMW X2 M35i Prototype Rips up the Nurburgring

A hot version of the BMW X2 could be on the way, with an X2 prototype having been spied testing at the Nurburgring recently.

In the video embedded above, two different X2 prototypes are seen pounding around the Nurburgring. It’s clear from the loud exhaust note that these are no normal X2s, with the engine emitting an aggressive sound accompanied by a loud bark upon upshift. It doesn’t sound as sonorous as BMW’s inline-six engines, so it seems as though the hot X2, which is rumored to be called M35i xDrive, will tap BMW’s B48 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. The engine should be making around 300 hp in the sportier X2 and will be paired with BMW’s quick shifting eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive system.

It’s not clear when the X2 M35i may arrive, but with many of Europe’s automakers readying debuts for the 2018 Paris Motor Show, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it unveiled in the French capital when the show kicks off in October. If we don’t see it there, a debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Motor Show in late November is also a strong possibility. No matter where BMW chooses to show the X2 35i first, we don’t think we’ll have to wait very much longer to see it.

For now, you can listen to the prototypes squeal their tires in the video embedded above.
