BMW is currently hot weather testing the 8 Series Convertible in Death Valley and despite the name, they thought it would be a nice place to take some pictures.

Although we’ve seen the car in spy pictures, this is BMW’s first time showing the car off, albeit under camouflage.

The 8 Series Convertible is currently in the acid testing phase of its development and it being run through clouds of dust and in extreme heat to make sure that all of the car’s systems (specifically the fabric roof and the infotainment system) can cope with the requirements of some of the planet’s most extreme conditions.

We presume that, like the hardtop version, the 8 Series Convertible will get a 4.4-liter V8 making around 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. The drivetrain will be paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission, sending power to all four wheels.

Although they hadn’t shown it before, BMW did previously confirm that the 8 Series Convertible (as well as the 8 Series Gran Coupe) will debut in 2019. Both variants are also expected to get M versions before the end of 2019, too.
