Vaughn Gittin Jr. Claims 2010 Formula Drift Championship

There was certainly a lot of hype around Vaughn Gittin Jr’s Ford Mustang at the beginning of this year’s 2010 Formula Drift season. The newly built 2011 Ford Mustang, with help from sponsors Monster Energy Drink and Falken Tire, featured every bit of experience Gittin and his team has developed over the years of drifting American muscle. And all the hard work has finally paid off as Gittin Jr. has taken the 2010 Formula Drift championship.

This past weekend, the season finale took place at Irwindale Speedway. And while Vaughn Gittin was clearly the leader in points, Tanner Foust and teammate Daijiro Yoshihara still had an outside chance of taking the championship. But Gittin wasn’t letting off the gas anytime soon facing two-time champion Tanner Foust in the grand finale. Even with the championship locked down at that point, Gittin put on a show for the spectators, taking Foust to a one-more time battle. Ultimately the Irwindale event would belong to Foust with Gittin still taking home for the 2010 championship.

This season was a dominating one for Gittin Jr and his Falken Tire / Monster Energy Drink team. He found the podium at six of seven events showing just how much experience pays off. So a huge congratulations goes out to the Falken Tire team for finally locking down a championship and we look forward to seeing what they have in waiting for 2011.

Formula Drift Going 3D With DIRECTV

Think the 3D craze is just a fad and going away silently into the night? Think again. As skeptical as we were with the whole Avatar movie craze in 3D, seeing was believing. How technology has changed over the years has seriously impacted how we enjoy our entertainment at home. With more and more sports broadcasts going towards 3D, it’s no surprise the brilliant minds over at Formula Drift have teamed up with DIRECTV to bring the first ever 3D drifting broadcast to households nationwide.

The footage will be filmed at this weekend’s season finale at Irwindale Speedway and DIRECTV couldn’t have picked a better venue. With its high speed banks and insane clipping points, Irwindale Speedway is also officially known as the “House of Drift” and will truly let viewers get a great idea of what drifting is all about. For those who have witnessed drifting at a live event, the excitement level is intense. And perhaps drifting in 3D will come as close as we can get to the excitement from our households.

Formula Drift claims that it’ll be aired before the end of the year on DIRECTV’s 3D channel, n3D. Perhaps it’ll be a sign of things to come for 2011?

Discount Tire Lexus IS350 Drift Car Turned Into Wall Art

So what do you do with a drift car that struggled to find its rightful way to the podium? You cut it up and hang it on the wall of course. Discount Tire has taken the now defunct Lexus IS350 drift car that they built in collaboration with Falken Tire for Formula Drift, cut it up in half and turned it into a wall ornament for their office.

Titan Motorsports Looking to Compete in Formula Drift

The folks at Wrecked Magazine have started/elaborated on the rumor that Titan Motorsports would be turning towards drifting for 2011. With their dominance in sport compact drag racing and their expertise in all things horsepower and motorsports, it wouldn’t be a surprise that Titan would get their hands dirty in some sideways action. So instead of just hunting around, we went straight to our insider source at Titan Motorsports to get some of the details.

Introducing 'Drift Art' an Interesting Blend Of Autocross And Drifting

So clearly drifting has swept America by storm, skipping all the way across the ocean from Japan. And now it’s influencing other forms of motorsports out in the Middle East. But there is something interesting about what they’re trying to do: it’s not quite the drifting that we’re used to seeing, nor is it quite autocross the way we’re used to seeing. What they intentionally end up doing is setting up what would appear to be an autocross track, dousing it with water for a slick surface and promoting the drivers to do a controlled, out-of-control, lap around the course.

The first dead giveaway that this isn’t drifting as we’re used to seeing is the everyday vehicles lining up to compete on the course, much like autocross fashion. Then seeing a large collection of AWD cars like Mitsubishi‘s Evolution and Subaru’s WRX.

SSK Racing out in the Middle East is promoting the series as Drift Art.

We’re going to safely assume that it’s rather difficult to hold a sanctioned drift event out in the Middle East with actual tandem battles. Instead this format can reach out to the grassroots level racers and let them have an event filled with fun and the opportunity to do what we all wish we could do with our cars on a daily basis. We can’t wait to see what they have in store and how they’ll take this to the next level. But please, someone needs to let them know that it’s “professional,” not profissional.

Tatra V8-Powered Trabant Drift Car Is An Awesome Sight

A quick history lesson before we actually get into talking about this awesome creation from the Czech Republic. Tatra is a vehicle manufacturer based out of the Czech Republic and was originally founded back in 1850. The Tatra brand however didn’t become a reality until 1919 and is the third oldest automaker in the world behind Daimler Mercedes-Benz and Peugeot. An obscure automaker on the global scene, Tatra is recognized for its rear-mounted, air-cooled V8 engine; which when developed back in the 1930s was very sophisticated for its time.

Falken Tire Drift Team Sweeps Podium At Formula Drift Las Vegas

This past weekend was Formula Drift’s fifth event of the season, taking place out in scorching Las Vegas. To combat the heat, the event actually took place late at night and was fittingly named “Round 5: After Dark.” With the championship now coming down to the wire, teams have been swapping out motors and finding new ways to gain an advantage against the more consistent teams as familiar faces such as Samuel Hubinette, Rhys Millen and Tanner Foust are barely in championship contention; with Tanner Foust being the closest in third place.

But the weekend would belong to the dedicated team from Falken Tire, once again sweeping the podium with a first, second and third finish. Sitting on top however wouldn’t be Daijiro Yoshihara or Vaughn Gittin Jr., both of which had secured event wins this season, but rather their teammate Tyler McQuarrie in the Nissan 350Z convertible. Gittin Jr. would got himself in a Mustang vs. Mustang tandem battle against Tony Brakohiapa but the skilled veteran Gittin took third place and maintain the points lead.

The final tandem battle of the night pitted McQuarrie against Yoshihara – with Yoshihara having been amazingly consistent throughout the season, while McQuarrie battled ups-and-downs but stayed persistent and optimistic. All his hard work would finally pay off as he took the win after Yoshihara’s S13 had mechanical troubles.

This is McQuarrie’s first career victory in Formula Drift and is just icing on the cake for another fantastic weekend from Falken Tires.

D1 Grand Prix Delays US Events To 2011: Surprise, Surprise

Here’s the most anticipated, yet expected drift news of the year. D1 Grand Prix has announced that their US-based events will be pushed until the 2011 season, and even then we find that hard to believe. All the rumors that were brewing about a 2010 season had basically faded away, and as much as we’d hate to say it, a lot of people just stopped even caring if the D1 Grand Prix had a presence this year.

The fact is, D1 Grand Prix was great for the sport of drifting in America in its initial stages, bringing in all the excitement that drift enthusiasts yearned for. But the company’s trials and tribulations in America have really left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth. Combine that with the fact that Formula Drift is very much alive and well, running extremely successful events and at the end of the day we’re not really sure who would care for D1 Grand Prix in America.

But the good news is, Japan’s series will still be shown on SPEED TV and that is still scheduled as promised. We’ll just have to enjoy the drama on the television.

Team Need for Speed Drift Video Stars Matt Powers and Mad Mike [video]

The perfect spectator sport, drifting’s rapid growth is also due to its drivers that have come to have their own celebrity-like status. Always overly enthusiastic and true characters of the sport, fans are quick to attach themselves to their favorite driver, much like their favorite basketball player or quarterback.

Will Roegge has been releasing some top-notch digital films centered around the automotive industry and this one is no different. He traveled to the first couple of Formula Drift events, capturing coverage of the Team Need for Speed Drift drivers Matt Powers ( Nissan 240SX S14) and Mad Mike (Red Bull Mazda RX-7) along with interviews and highlights.

What this video shows the world is how each and every driver has such different driving styles and personalities on and off the track. But at the end of the day, they’re all still vying for the same championship and share the same passion and love for a growing sport.

Rogue Status RWD Scion XB Drift Car Really Does Get Sideways [video]

Back in May, we caught wind of Rogue Status’ Drift xB that they built. Initially we were a little skeptical that it would be more of a show car and street performer, rather than a competition-ready drift machine. Would it ever go sideways on a track? No one knew or could tell, so needless to say we’re surprised and pleasantly happy when this video surfaced.

Professional Formula Drift driver Patrick Morduant headed to Willow Springs in the RWD 2JZ-Powered Scion xB to really put it to the test. The car actually does pretty well and looks wicked going sideways around Horse Thief Mile and we’re loving every second of the video. What’s also interesting is that Patrick Morduant was the one putting it to the test and not one of the Scion-sponsored drivers such as Ken Gushi or Tanner Foust. Regardless, we’re sure it was just for fun and isn’t a sign of things to come. But hey, it would be interesting to see how it would hold up in real competition wouldn’t it?

Ryuji Miki's Lexus SC430 Drift Car Now Available in Forza Motorsport 3

One of the coolest features in Forza Motorsport 3 is the ability to create graphics for your vehicles, pixel-by-pixel or however you can if you’re talented enough. We wouldn’t say we’re not talented, we just don’t have the patience to figure out better ways to do our own graphics like some other people. But Dr. Westies is extremely talented and this isn’t his first toy for the Xbox Live players.

SEMA's Racers Against Street Racing Campaign Is Awesome

We at Autoguide strongly condemn street racing in principle, but even beyond that, driving on the track is like swallowing the blue pill from The Matrix. Once you’ve gotten a taste of what pushing your vehicle to the limit in a controlled environment is like, swerving through lanes and doing highway runs against your buddy just seems…well, lame.

SEMA has sponsored a new program called “Racers Against Street Racing”, a campaign designed to get people off the streets and onto the track. Best of all, the website has a nifty “Find A Track” app, that uses Google maps to show you all the tracks in your area. Based on the graphic above, it looks like there’s a track within a couple hours drive of any location in the United States. Now you have no excuse to be driving stupidly on public roads.

Formula Drift Driver Chris Forsberg Takes Part in The Bro Show's Latest Stunt

Product placement has always been a key part of any successful marketing and advertising campaigns. It all started with movies and television shows and now has even entered the realm of video games. Some campaigns are just pure tacky while others are cleverly placed to really inspire the consumer to go out and get the product. With the advent of YouTube and online videos, companies have taken their campaigns online where they can easily reach millions of viewers in a matter of minutes, literally. Viral marketing is now king and online media is the throne that it sits on.

Ever since NOS Energy Drink was acquired by the Coca-Cola company, good ‘ol corporate America has done a real strong push in bringing the product into the face of the masses. By teaming up with all facets of motorsports, NOS Energy Drink has done a great job tying their product to the right consumers. Chris Forsberg is one of the main NOS Energy Drink drivers, competing in Formula Drift and being a two-time champion. So it’s no surprise that NOS would be more than willing to spend some advertising dollars with some clever marketing.

The Bro Show consists of Jeff and Curtis, two brothers willing to do “anything” to get their own online series on Break.com. So episodes mainly consist of wild and crazy stunts and this one is no exception. The brothers headed out to Irwindale Speedway with Chris Forsberg and his NOS Energy Drink Nissan 350Z convertible to get a taste of drifting…and naturally, NOS Energy Drink.

After Forsberg did a demo lap, Jeff climbed into the passenger seat believing Curtis, his brother, was just hanging out on the track dressed in bright orange. Easy for the driver to spot and avoid…right? Well what Jeff didn’t know was that Curtis was swapped out for a dummy and Forsberg was told to crash straight into the dummy. Check out the video after the jump to see how it all unfolds.

'Keep Drifting Fun' Releases Video From Formula Drift Atlanta Featuring Chris Forsberg

The boy geniuses from ‘ Keep Drifting Fun‘, Will Roegge and Josh Herron, have just released their latest video, an up close and personal account of the Formula Drift Atlanta weekend from the perspective of defending champ Chris Forsberg.

Forsberg, who’s NOS energy drink sponsored Nissan 350Z roadster is among the most recognizable machines in the wildly popular Formula Drift series, tells the tale of an action-packed weekend of drifting including a little NASCAR-style bumping and a bent suspension. But as the video shows, Forsberg battles through adversity like a true champion to finish on the podium, moving him into 5th place in the 2010 championship standings heading into Round 3 at Wall Speedway in New Jersey this coming weekend.

The dynamic duo of Roegge and Herron definitely have a genuine passion for drifting, traveling the country in their 1974 Volkswagen Westfalia van while documenting the action at all seven rounds of the Formula Drift championship as well as visiting many grassroots drift events as part of their ‘Keep Drifting Fun’ documentary effort.

Check out the video after the jump and be sure to visit keepdriftingfun.com for more info on their cross-country adventure and video-making. And if you happen to bump into these bearded drift hobos at an event, give them an air high-five for us!

Vernal Equinox Video Provides Drifting Entertainment, Not Much Substance

We’d be kidding ourselves and the entire world when we say we watch videos on YouTube looking for substance or a plot. When it comes down to it, car videos are like porn for us. We don’t care about a story, we’re drooling over the action.

Vernal Equinox is a fancy 12-minute flick by French filmmaker Stephane Benini. Truth be told though, it’s not exactly 12 minutes, the last three minutes and change is a nice long credit roll reminiscent of what you’d see out of Hollywood. But nonetheless the video is entertaining for any car nut out there, especially those in love with drifting.

The video is well thought out and there’s no denying the editing and quality of filming. Each shot took quite the setup and direction to do and all of it flows nicely together. But hey, we’re no Roger Ebert over here, but we’d give it two thumbs up and well worth the watch.

Drifting Gone Wrong: Camera Man Becomes Collateral Damage

Drifting is a dangerous sport, and not just for the drivers. Having photographed several drift events this author is well aware of the risks involved –  I’ve have even had a few close calls, on one occasion a friend of mine pulling me away right as the vehicle struck the K-rail. At another event the “track mats” shot up (while the vehicle was doing a burn out over them) flying right past my head. So needless to say, as safe as they try to make it for the photographers, there’s always a risk with cars going sideways.

During the recent SSS Gecko Cup drifting event in Warsaw, Poland a camera man became collateral damage when an Nissan S13 went flinging sideways a little too quickly. The car slammed into the safety rail (which wasn’t the concrete K-rails we’re used to) which in turn knocked into the camera man. Clearly the camera man takes a nice fall and apparently he was unconscious for a few seconds, thought it doesn’t seem so. But hey, he lives to shoot another day and that’s all that matters!

Make sure to check out the video after the break, it makes you think twice how closely you stand next to the action!

Girl Drifters Planning to Invade the Sport [with Video]

With this past weekend’s Formula Drift 2010 season opener in Long Beach, one thing was noticeably missing from the roster: a female driver. Years past, we have seen a couple of female entries including Yoshie and her S14. Popular magazines have done articles (more in mockery than in editorial) of import models learning how to drive alongside a professional drifter.

While women as a whole have been showcased as eye-candy within the automotive market, many worldwide are making a statement by showing off their skills of going sideways. There are plenty in America alone, many of whom are looking forward to stepping it up to the next level of professional drifting and making a name for themselves. Perhaps we’re not too far off in having a “Danica Patrick” of drifting.

Over in Japan, where drifting “originates”, many girls and women are taking it to the guys. They’re working on the cars themselves, driving, testing and tuning – and many of them are doing it extremely well. In the video after the jump, a “Girl’s Drift Festival” is captured on film with girls piloting all sorts of S-chassis going sideways, and fast. Check it out!

Formula Drift Long Beach 2010: Energy Drinks Reign Supreme

Breaking into its seventh season, Formula DRIFT took to the Streets of Long Beach for its trademark season opener. This event is always a fan favorite being one of the only, if not the only, drift event that takes place on actual streets rather than a race track, course or parking lot. Many new cars made their debut at this event, some having great success while others clearly have a lot of bugs to figure out. American muscle prevailed however, as Vaughn Gittin Jr.’s new 2011 Falken Tire / Monster Energy Drink Mustang claimed the top podium spot with its debut.

So when Gittin finally debuted the car sporting an all out Monster Energy scheme, we applauded. Rhys Millen Tests Hyundai Genesis Coupe Ahead of Formula Drift Season Opener [video]

Rhys Millen is no stranger to any form of motorsports. However, he is probably most well-known for his Red Bull stunts and his impressive drifting career. Hailing from New Zealand, Millen was one of the US pioneers of drifting, completely dominating its initial competitive seasons with his Pontiac GTO. He then moved onto the Pontiac Solstice and shocked the world last year with the announcement of moving onto Korean-manufacturer Hyundai and its new Genesis Coupe.

There’s no denying that it was a perfect opportunity for Hyundai to extend their brand image and marketing to young enthusiasts, but was it a perfect fit for Millen? Some would argue that it was an unsuccessful inaugural campaign, perhaps even leaving an ugly mark on Millen’s otherwise successful drifting career. But we all know Millen hardly backs down from a challenge. Duly noted from his attempt at flipping a truck on New Year’s Eve a couple years back.

Plus, it didn’t help that last season Millen ran the first event with a Nissan VQ35 3.5-liter V6 under the hood. He later switched to a stroked and turbocharged 4.1-liter Hyundai V6, which has been pumped up further for the 2010 season to 650-hp.

We caught a glimpse of Millen testing at the El Toro Air Force Base a few weeks back and now Millen’s official 2010 Preseason Testing video has surfaced on the Web. The Genesis Coupe looks remarkably improved this year with Millen smoothly transitioning and swinging it sideways with what seems to be little effort.  Check out the video after the jump:

Nick Hogan Back to Drifting; Say What?

Earlier this month we reported about Samuel Hubinette’s plans for 2010. What some may not remember is that merely three years ago, celebrity and son of Hulk Hogan, Nick Hogan, was actually competitively drifting alongside Samuel in a Dodge Viper SRT-10. Clearly the fame that came with Nick Hogan and fast cars wasn’t from his short drifting career. Instead, it was from the tragic accident that proved that there is such thing as too much horsepower. Nonetheless, the kid’s back out on the prowl and has committed to the Xtreme Drift Circuit (XDC) campaigning a black turbocharged Nissan 350Z.

The good news out of all this is that Nick Hogan will be involved with a group called “Keep It On The Track”, promoting and educating Americans the consequences of participating in illegal street races and driving without a seat belt. Perhaps it’s a day late, especially for the unfortunate passenger during Hogan’s Supra accident, but hey whatever it takes to keep it off the streets.

We couldn’t help but to include one of Hogan’s highlights from his last drifting endeavor, taking a champion-caliber car and finding the wall at Irwindale Speedway. That’s after the jump.

Samuel Hbinette to Field Two-Car Dodge-Sponsored Team in 2010 Formula DRIFT Season

2009 was an up-and-down year for Samuel Hübinette who has been a two-time Formula DRIFT champion and Hollywood stunt driver. Notorious for ripping it up in a Mopar-backed Viper SRT10 for many years and nicknamed The Crazy Swede by fellow competitors, Hübinette had a difficult start with his Mopar-backed Charger in 2009; and then mid-season Mopar was forced to back out of their sponsorship altogether due to difficult economic times.

As if the 2009 season couldn’t get any more tumultuous, Hübinette’s NuFormz team owner, Shaun Carlson, tragically passed away in October. Question marks were raised everywhere as one of the most talented drivers in the Formula DRIFT series seemed to be without a full ride. But talent always prevails, and Hübinette has finally announced his big plans for 2010.

Now factory-backed by Dodge, Hübinette will be campaigning his all new Dodge Challenger while teammate Andrew “ACP” Comrie-Picard (new to Formula DRIFT) will be swinging sideways in the familiar and championship-winning Viper SRT-10. Samuel Hübinette Racing also welcomes back the partnership of BFGoodrich tires. Hübinette looks forward to a strong and successful 2010 drifting season and we wouldn’t be surprised if he’ll be back in championship form with all his expertise and experience over the years.

We’ll be sure to keep an eye on both drivers, when the season kicks off in Long Beach, CA on April 9-10.

The official release is available after the jump.

Drifting: Bergenholtz Racing / Joon Maeng Mazda RX-8 Testing Video

Every March for the last few years, drifting fans nationwide stay glued to the Internet for news and videos of their favorite drifters and teams. With the Formula DRIFT season opening up in April on the Streets of Long Beach, teams all over the nation are out testing their off-season changes, new cars and even new drivers. The Bergenholtz Brothers, Ron and Ed, are no strangers to high-horsepower motorsports. They made groundbreaking changes to the world of FWD drag racing, capturing two NHRA Pro FWD championships while campaigning their Mazda 6 race car. But recently they’ve been searching for a new challenge and with drifting gaining speed, momentum and more importantly, sponsors, the Bergenholtz Brothers turned to a new automotive passion.

Recently they announced the signing of Joon Maeng to their team in order to pilot the RX-8 that they built last season. Joon Maeng had been a privateer with his Nissan 240SX for the past couple of years, making some noise amongst all the high-profile competitors that all carry heavy sponsors. It seemed like a great fit when it was announced that Joon Maeng would be piloting the Bergenholtz Racing Mazda RX-8. It was even cooler when they announced their title sponsor would be Full Tilt Poker along with Nitto Tires.

While drifting started out being coveted with Japanese rides from Toyota and Nissan, when it made its splash stateside, domestic muscle has taken center stage. The rumble of the V8 against the screaming turbocharged four-cylinder made the crowd go wild and was something that no one else could witness anywhere. Not even Japan. So it’s great to see the Bergenholtz Brothers throwing a rotary into the mix, pushing over 600whp and 480 ft-lbs of torque to the rear wheels of this sideways machine. So let’s satisfy what the fans all want, check out the first testing video of the season after the break with Joon Maeng behind the wheels of the Bergenholtz Racing Full Tilt Poker Nitto Mazda RX-8. Mopar Drops Drifting Sponsorship

As a part of Chrysler’s restructuring plan it has announced that Mopar will cease its sponsorship of the NuFormz Racing team and driver Samuel Hübinette.

The writing has been on the wall for quite some time now as Chrysler has been seeking every area where it can cut costs. Additionally, a strong sign was when Hübinette took to the track during the first round of the Formula D series in Long Beach in a Dodge Viper – and not the Challenger (pictured above) that Mopar debuted at the 2008 SEMA Show.

“As a part of Chrysler’s comprehensive restructuring plan to revitalize our business and succeed as a stronger car company, we’re rigorously reviewing all expenditures and making tough business decisions,” said Mike Accavitti, Director of Brand Marketing and Strategy at Chrysler. “The decision to end Team Mopar’s sponsorship of NuFormz Racing was difficult because of our long-term relationship with the ream and all of the success we’ve enjoyed competing in Formula Drift.

Driving for Mopar, Hübinette won the first ever Formula D contest and holds the title of the most outright victories. He won the championship in 2004 and 2006 and was a runner up in ’05 and ’08.

“I had a great eight-year run as a member of the Team Mopar family and want to thank the company for all the great memories I’m taking away,” said NuFormz Racing team owner Shaun Carlson. “It’s a tough decision, but given the current economic environment inside and outside of racing, I certainly understand it.”

The sponsorship contract will be terminated after the next event in New Jersey on June 5/6.

Genesis Coupe Drift Car Gets Hyundai Engine

Recently we ran a story reporting that the Rhys Millen Racing Hyundai Genesis Coupe that competed in the first round of the Formula D series was actually powered by (ghasp!) a Nissan motor. That won’t be the case from now-on, however, as Rhys Millen himself has just confirmed that for the second race of the season, the Hyundai drift car will in fact be powered by Hyundai, with a turbocharged version of the company’s 3.8-liter Lamdba V6.

Dodge Challenger to Go Drifting

Chrysler’s global parts and service division, Mopar, will continue its successful drifting program in 2009 using the new dodge Challenger. The Challenger replaces the Charger used in years past by Dodge driver and two-time Formula D Champion Samuel Hübinette.

Significantly lighter than the factory car thanks to a stripped-down interior and a new carbon fiber body by NuFormz Racing, the shiny silver drift car is powered by a Mopar A8 engine built by Gary Stanton Racing Engines. With the addition of Mopar W9 ported heads and, no doubt, loads of other internal modifications, the Mopar Drift Challenger now makes 850 hp and 849 ft-lbs of torque.

Mopar also supplied the sway bars for the custom suspension.

For 2009 Mopar will continue its sponsorship agreement with BF Goodrich.

One interesting highlight is the use of rollerblade wheels on the rear quarter panels – a design intended to keep the big brute sliding across the concrete barriers (as is likely to happen) instead of bouncing off them.

The 2009 Formula D season is scheduled to begin April 10th at Long Beach.
