Top 10 Cars of the Frankfurt Auto Show

There’s no denying that the 2012 BMW M5 probably deserves a higher spot on our Frankfurt Auto Show Top 10 list, but here it is anyway. Maybe it’s that we all knew several months ago that it would have a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and make 562-hp that made its “official” reveal less captivating than it otherwise could have been. Still, don’t let the 10th place spot make you believe we think any less of what is likely to be crowned as the world’s highest performance sedan. After all, the M5 delivers the sort of performance you only expect to see in a concept car. But this is one very real machine.

BMW M5 Record Setting 7:55 Nurburgring Lap Time Now Slightly More Official

Reports of the BMW M5’s record-setting Nurburgring lap time are just starting to circulate now, well after we first covered the story last week. The source for the 7:55 run didn’t come from BMW, however, nor did it come from testing done by the automotive media, but from a website FastestLaps.com, raising some doubt as to its validity. Further calling into question the legitimacy of the number is the fact that it ever so conveniently tops the Porsche Panamera Turbo by one second.

BMW M5 Unofficially Crowned World's Fastest Sedan With 7:55 Nurburgring Lap Time

With a BMW factory driver behind the wheel of BMW’s new M5, the luxury sedan has reportedly turned in a lap time of 7:55 around the famed Nurburgring. This makes it the world’s fastest sedan, ahead of Porsche‘s Panamera Turbo (7:56) and Cadillac‘s CTS-V (7:59), and puts it on par of other supercars such as Ferrari’s F430 and is even one second quicker than Porsche’s 996 Turbo.

2012 BMW M5 Undergoes High-Speed Testing at Nardo Ring [Video]

BMW has just released the latest teaser video for its upcoming 2012 M5 and this time the super sedan is at Italy’s famous high speed Nardo Ring.

There’s not a lot too this video, but it’s still pretty cool and we do get a glimpse at the M5 in a new shade of blue. There’s also a short sound clip of the engine, which you can call your Wednesday a wasted 24 hours of life if you don’t hear it.

BMW even infuses some dry German humor into the piece with a shot showing the car driving 308 km/h (191 mph), followed by another shot of an engineer sipping coffee behind the wheel.

Previous to this, BMW released a video showing the new M5 undergoing handling testing in Mirimas France ( see that here) and you ca get a good idea of what the car will look like from the concept here.

As for the powertrain, look for a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 making well over 555-hp with the 2012 BMW M5 set to debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this Fall.

2012 BMW M5 Testing in Miramas, France [Video]

If you’re waiting for the debut of the 2012 BMW M5, you’ll have to keep on waiting. Not set to debut until the Frankfurt Auto Show this Fall, BMW is at least keeping those interested in the car (who isn’t?) appeased with plenty of teaser videos, images and a concept car.

The latest installment of the slow roll-out of info is this video detailing the car’s testing at BMW’s facility at Miramas in the south of France.

There’s plenty of action and more info about the latest M5. Specific details will have to wait until much closer to the Frankfurt show. Until then, rest assured the 555+ horsepower twin-turbo V8 M5 will handily out-shine its rivals.

2012 BMW M5 Spied With Manual Transmission in California [Video]

Originally rumored to only be offered with an 8-speed automatic, BMW has since confirmed the 2012 M5 will instead use a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission to help deliver super quick gearshifts. What BMW has yet to announce, however, is if the new M5 will also get a manual transmission option. Now it appears they don’t need to as the video below seems to confirm the existence of a traditional stick shift and third pedal.

Spotted testing in Southern California, the car certainly displays the jerkiness of a manual, while the squealing brakes you can hear are believed to be evidence of ceramic rotors.

When it does finally debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show this Fall, look for a twin-turbo V8 engine making more than 555-hp, as well as fuel saving technology like start-stop and regenerative braking.
