With the verified numbers in, it seems the 2013 Shelby GT500 was actually underrated at 650 hp. Instead it makes an impressive 662 hp and 630 lb-ft of torque.

Carroll Shelby was on hand for the unveiling of the 2013 Shelby GT500 on the eve of the LA Auto Show, calling it “the greatest Mustang ever built.” He’s got good reason to say so too, with Ford billing the car as having the most powerful production V8 engine in the world. Bring it on ZL1! That’s what Ford is shouting at cross-town rival Chevy with the debut of the 2013 Shelby GT500, which has received a 100-hp bump to deliver 650-hp straight from the factory. But that’s not all, with torque rising to 600 lb-ft and a top speed of 200-mph. Yes, a 200-mph Mustang!

It blends the best of the past with the present, and it’s too much car for not enough man. And next year the Ford Shelby GT500 will be even wilder thanks to a new supercharged 5.8-liter V8 engine.

That is about to change in 2013, when Ford launches a very modern version of the GT500, tossing aside the big supercharger in favor of some very modern turbocharged technology. Ford will carry on using a V8, although the exact displacement of the powerplant is not known. Rumors of a 5.0-liter and a 5.8-liter have surfaced.

The introduction of the Camaro ZL1 didn’t bring balance to the muscle car wars, it has only reignited them. According to sources inside Ford, the 2013 version of the Shelby GT500 will up its output some more, this time laying down 600-hp.
