On June 19; Mercedes-Benz demonstration driver, Mauro Calo, has set a new world record for the longest powersliding drift, smashing the previous one by almost 400 meters (0.24 miles) , for a total distance of 2,308 meters (1.43 miles).

Mercedes-Benz demonstration driver, Mauro Calo, is attempting to set a new world record, the longest ever powerslide. Calo will attempt this feat this coming weekend at Mercedes-Benz World, located close to the historic Brooklands circuit in Surrey, United Kingdom.

Some people just have all the perks on the job. Instead of working hard and playing hard, they’re playing hard while just working. Ed Redfern is Mercedes-Benz‘s senior test driver and decided to take the new flagship SLS AMG out to the circle track at Mercedes-Benz World for a little fun. Armed with a wet, slick track and the SLS AMG’s incredible performance, Redfern shows that the SLS is fully capable of swinging sideways and holding a drift.

Now this video isn’t the same high-speed crazy drifting action we’re used to seeing at say a Formula Drift event, but it’s still pretty entertaining to watch even though it’s short. There’s even a little bit of comedy at the very end that’s just ever-so-slightly embarrassing for Ed.

How long until someone with tons of money takes an SLS AMG out to Formula Drift? Could you imagine a drifting series where only luxury supercars are allowed to compete? Maybe some day…

So anticipated in fact that many passionate enthusiasts have lost interest with the constant changing of release dates. But nonetheless, the release is on the horizon and after $60 million or so dollars spent on R&D, we all hope it lives up to its expectations.

Mercedes-Benz UK clearly believes in Gran Turismo 5’s potential and are using it as part of their SLS AMG Rare Experiences campaign. They are setting up a Gran Turismo 5 Racing Experience at Mercedes-Benz World in the UK, where 100 lucky virtual racers will win their way into real life seat time in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. How are those 100 lucky virtual racers chosen? By their skill in Gran Turismo 5. The top 100 fastest lap times will get a spot behind the real steering wheel to drive, drift and slide around the Mercedes-Benz World track in the SLS AMG. Professional training with a driver is included.

If only Mercedes would bring this contest to North America.
