Rear-wheel drive is generally considered to be the best powertrain layout for handling, and while all-wheel-drive devotees might disagree, the fact remains that RWD is the choice for purists.

About five years ago, Toyota and Subaru reintroduced the world to the world of affordable, lightweight, rear-wheel drive coupes. The Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ were extremely hyped, with enthusiasts believing that sports cars were making a comeback in a world dominated by crossovers.

The Scion brand may be a fading memory, but fans of affordable sports cars need not worry. In North America, the fun-to-drive FR-S is still available, just with Toyota badges and a new name for 2017.

Relative to pretty much everything else Toyota touches, the Scion brand was nothing short of a failure.

Toyota has announced pricing for two of its orphaned Scion models and its popular small sedan, the Corolla. 

It’s a bit of a guessing game as to which cars will be collectible in the future, though there are certainly factors that let us take a guess. 

When Scion officially folds and the FR-S becomes a Toyota model this summer in North America, the car will be known as the Toyota 86. 

“I have to buy one of these,” I said. It took just one corner, one gear change and one easily controllable slide in the Scion FR-S to convince me that it was a fantastic sports car.

Toyota has reportedly confirmed that it is developing on a new compact sports car that will sit below the FR-S.

Enthusiasts wanted an affordable rear-wheel drive sports car, so Toyota delivered the Scion FR-S. It seems like the Japanese automaker is listening to its fans again for the mid-cycle refresh of its tail-happy coupe and will inject it with more performance.

Toyota engineers will take on this year’s One Lap of America endurance race with a Scion FR-S.

The Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ are receiving new updates this year for the Japanese market.
