Dinan BMW V10 Makes 720 Glowing Purple Horsepower [Video]

Recently, California based BMW tuning company, Dinan Cars, revealed a video of its latest engine project. Beginning with the V10 BMW S85 engine found in the E60 BMW M5, which remains one of the most sophisticated power plants engineered to date, Dinan bored and stroked the displacement from 5-liters to 5.8-liters, and then installed performance cams, a dry sump oil system, and finished it off with a racing exhaust. Custom ECU tuning software allowed the engine to run on 98 octane race gas in order to produce a stratospheric 720-hp at 8300 RPM. You read that correctly. That’s 124-hp per liter from a naturally aspirated V10 engine!

Designed to be used in the Riley Technologies 2011 mkXXV track car, check out Dinan’s engine demonstration video after the jump. More than anything, it’s the blazing plum purple glow emitting from the headers that got people talking. Do not touch!

Enthusiast Shoves Viper V-10 Into Saab 9-3

Somewhere, somehow, we think Samuel Hubinette may have something to do with this crazy Viper-powered Saab 9-3. Hubinette, known as “The Crazy Swede” and campaigned a Dodge Viper in many successful bouts of tandem drifting in his days, so it’d only make sense that this Saab 9-3 with a Viper V-10 would have to do with him. But alas, it has absolutely nothing to do with the drifter and apparently there’s a crazier Swede out there.

Ford to Offer 6.8-Liter V10 in F-650 and F-750 Chassis Cab Models

Despite GM having exited the medium duty market, Ford isn’t resting on its laurels. It’s F-650 and F-750 chassis cabs, which are primarily used for towing and commercial grade hauling work are receiving a few updates. One of the most significant is the adoption of the 6.8-liter V-10 found in the lighter Super Duty trucks (F-250-F-550) for the 2012 model year. According to Len Deluca, Director of Ford’s Commercial Truck Sales and Marketing, the addition of the V-10 will be “welcome news to many business and municipalities,” while providing a wider range of powertrain options and solutions than Ram, Navistar, Isuzu and Hino (to name a few) currently offer in the Class 6 and  7 truck market.

Official: Audi to Build V10-powered R8

After over a year of speculation, Audi has finally confirmed it will build a V10-powered R8. The engine, as expected, will be donated from the Lamborghini LP560. It will, however, be somewhat less powerful when shoehorned into the German Gallardo. With 525hp and 391 ft-lbs of torque, the numbers are certainly impressive although not quite the 552hp and 398 ft-lbs found in the LP560.
Audi claims the V-10-powered R8 will rocket to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 196 mph.
Despite the larger engine the V10 R8 will weight just 68 lbs more than the standard model for a total of 3,571 lbs. This engine will feature direct injection as well as a dry-sump lubrication system. Audi also plans to use this engine (with only minor changes) in it’s R8 GT3 race cars starting in 2009.
