The Chevrolet Volt is the first plug-in vehicle to sell 100,000 units in the U.S.

General Motors has sold its 50,000th Chevrolet Volt vehicle, hitting the milestone last month.

While sales of 1,864 units isn’t anything to boast about, the Nissan Leaf outsold the Chevrolet Volt last month by a margin of 76 units.

The Chevrolet Volt is at an odd crossroads for sales, with the Nissan Leaf dropping its price significantly to be more competitive and other more compelling PHEVs reaching the market.

The Nissan Leaf enjoyed a second month of strong sales while the Chevrolet Volt fell 11 percent in April.

Chevrolet’s answer to the electric car problem, the Volt, faltered in sales last month, dropping to roughly half the volume seen in September and October. 

It’s a battle of less than epic proportions, yes, but the Chevrolet Volt outsold Nissan’s Leaf by a big margin for the second month in a row last month.

In a recent report detailing the failings of General Motors, it was reported that the automaker was allegedly losing $49,000 on every Chevrolet Volt sold. GM has now issued a statement refuting those claims.

Despite record setting sales numbers in August, the Chevrolet Volt is still losing about $49,000 on every unit sold, according to a Reuters report.

As July’s car sales figures start to trickle in, the Chevrolet Volt continued its dominance against the Nissan Leaf for the sixth straight month in a row.

What a turnaround the Chevrolet Volt has experienced in the past few months.

GM set a lofty goal of selling 10,000 Chevrolet Volts in 2011 and has finally admitted that they won’t be able to hit their target sales mark this year and probably won’t be achieved until sometime in early 2012.

The Chevrolet Volt has been reported as averaging fuel economy high enough to see 1,000 miles between trips to the gas station.
