Scout Motors Will Debut Its Electric Off-Road SUV Next Month

Scout Motors, Volkswagen’s rugged electric SUV and truck spin-off, said this month that it will show off the designs for both models on October 24. Frankly, the timing couldn’t be better. For starters, the Scout has experienced a little bit of a resurgence in the media thanks to Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz, who owns one. Just six months ago, a lot of North Americans may have never heard of Scout, but Walz’ Midwest Dad Energy and a Glacier Blue Scout have changed that.

Originally, International Harvester, a company known for making agricultural machinery rather than road-going SUVs, produced the Scout SUV from 1960 to 1980. International Harvester eventually bowed out of the SUV game while competitors like the Wrangler and Bronco soldiered on. Jump forward a few decades, and VW picks up the rights to the Scout name from Navistar, the company that succeeded IH in 2020.

So what’s the Scout brand supposed to be? Effectively, an electric, rugged off-road brand built to take on the Scout’s original competitors: the Bronco and the Wrangler. While only the Wrangler 4xe shows any signs of electrification, an EV as an alternative could hold some appeal.
