Porsche 911 Not Going Electric, Yet
As the automaker shifts to electric-powered vehicles, the 911 won’t go electric.
Porsche has really gone all-in on the fully electric thing. It plans to have 80% of its overall sales be fully electric by 2030. Well, all models except one - the Porsche 911. When it gets to 2030, the 911 will stand alone as the brand’s lone offering with an internal combustion engine, according to a report from Reuters.
It’s expected that the 911 will likely be powered by carbon neutral, synthetic fuels, or e-fuels by 2030, instead of gas. This reflects in Porsche’s investments; Porsche has greatly invested in e-fuels, including investing in a company in Chile called HIF Global. Although e-Fuels exist, and can be used in vehicles, its production has many analysts see their use as mostly limited, niche high-end vehicles – like the Porsche 911.
This won’t affect Porsche’s electrification plans, Porsche e-fuels team leader Karl Dums says that Porsche’s e-fuel plans and electrification plans are completely separate. Thus, the Cayenne and Macan will go fully electric, as will the 718 Boxster and Cayman models. The brand is also planning a large SUV that will slot above the Cayenne, which also will be electric. But, the 911 won’t make the jump.
E-fuels are pricy, costing as much as $12.90 per liter. At those rates, an electric car would by far be the more cost-effective option. Still, Porsche has pushed for an e-fuels exception to the EU’s 2035 internal combustion engine ban. If it passes, then the Porsche 911 might be one of the fuel gas-burning vehicles on the roads in the mid-2030s.
