Experts agree that the second biggest purchase we make as adults, behind a home, is a vehicle. When you head to a dealership and start looking at vehicles, sticker shock is a real concern, especially with the costs of some of the bigger SUVs and luxury models. There are some pretty great deals to be had out there, though, and you don’t have to sacrifice quality to get one. If you’re in the market for an SUV, and many of us are, there are some really nice SUVs to be had for just around $500 a month.

Now let’s set some parameters for this list. We based our planning off of you having a trade-in worth $5000, or a down payment of the same amount. We also went with basing payments on a good credit score. Keep in mind that if you don’t have a great credit score, you’ll need to either put up more down payment or finance the vehicle longer to keep the payments in the $500 range, or you will have a higher payment in the end. And should you need to take on a higher payment, you can refinance down the road for a better rate.

Why Spend Around $500 (Or Less) On An SUV?

To put it bluntly, you should be very careful to avoid getting in over your head on a monthly SUV payment. Financial experts suggest that a suitable payment for transportation should be somewhere between 10-20 percent of your monthly take-home pay. Before you go to a dealership, it is a good idea to sit down and come up with a budget and plan out exactly how much you can afford. At 20%, your income should be around $2,500 per month to safely afford a $500 SUV payment. Use a good online shopping tool to help you make the best choice.
