The Fisker Ocean Has Been Recalled Again

The Fisker Ocean has faced yet another recall, due to a software issue that could lead to an unexpected reduction in regenerative braking.

The recall affects 7,745 Ocean electric SUVs from the 2023 and 2024 model years, the only two years the Ocean was sold before Fisker filed for bankruptcy. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the software glitch may cause regenerative braking to decrease when decelerating over bumps, which could catch drivers off guard.

Although the vehicles still retain access to friction brakes, and normal operation resumes within 740 milliseconds, drivers may find themselves needing to press the brake pedal unexpectedly due to the reduced regenerative braking. Fisker has acknowledged one injury related to this issue.

To address the problem, Fisker plans to release an over-the-air software update. Owners will be notified by mail starting October 14, 2024.

This marks the fifth recall for the Ocean during its short production run, with three recalls affecting both the 2023 and 2024 models. Among these recalls was an earlier issue involving 8,204 vehicles in the U.S. related to sticking door handles that could prevent the doors from opening. Fisker’s struggles with the Ocean reflect broader challenges for the company. Production was slow to ramp up, and sales lagged, leaving the automaker vulnerable.
