Every Genesis Will Soon Be Offered As A Hybrid

Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury spinoff, already has its electrified models. While fleshing those out, the company will also look to capitalize on the popularity of hybrids. During Hyundai’s CEO Investor Day, the company said it will add hybrid variants for all of its Genesis models.

This, of course, excludes models that are electric only, like the GV60. Likely, making an EV an internal combustion-powered car is a pricey proposition. Regardless, Hyundai hopes this will help it to sell some 1.3 million hybrids by 2028.

Genesis hybrids will use the same TMED-II hybrid system that upcoming Hyundai models will use, scheduled to go into production in January next year. Mechanical details are scarce for the moment, but Hyundai/Genesis did have some insights. These hybrids will feature regenerative braking and something called vehicle-to-load charging. That, which can be abbreviated to “V2L,” means the car can power some devices, like a camp stove or a blender, just like its EVs can.

Hyundai is filling a gap with these models, saying the North American market currently “faces a shortage of hybrid supply,” and that the introduction of these hybrids will effectively double the Genesis lineup from seven to 14 models.
