AutoNation Highlights

Overall Rating 3.3
Reputation 3.7
Coverage 3.8
Price 2.1
Transparency 3.0
Customer Service 4.0

Founded in 1996, AutoNation is one of the nation’s largest automotive retailers selling both new and used cars. The company has over 300 locations spread across 18 states. Like many national car retail chains, it sells vehicle service contracts directly to customers to provide peace of mind once the factory warranty has expired. These contracts are serviced by a third-party administrator.

All repairs are made by factory-trained and certified technicians. The company guarantees every repair for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first.

AutoNation Warranty Cost

The cost of an AutoNation extended warranty is varies depending on your vehicle, deductible, plan, and coverage term. Vehicles with higher mileage are likely to be more expensive to cover, as older cars encounter more mechanical issues.

We reached out to AutoNation for a quote for a 2019 Hyundai Elantra with 45,000 miles and were offered these terms for a 60-month/75,000-mile plan:

  • Powertrain: $776.40/year
  • Silver: $815.20/year
  • Gold: $869.00/year
  • Platinum: $978.40/year

All of the quotes we received came with a $0 deductible. We found AutoNation’s prices to be higher than most other competitors. In our 2021 extended auto warranty survey which polled 1,000 consumers, 45 percent of respondents said they paid between $1,500 and $2,500 for their extended warranty plan.

Because AutoNation is a dealership, financing options are flexible. You can elect to include the cost of your extended car warranty with your vehicle financing contract. This allows you to pay less upfront but may mean that you end up paying interest on the cost of your extended warranty.

AutoNation Vehicle Protection Plan Coverage

An AutoNation vehicle protection plan can be bought through an AutoNation store at the point of purchase with most AutoNation cars. The maximum coverage limit offered by AutoNation is 75,000 miles, so you cannot purchase an AutoNation extended warranty for cars over 100K miles. If your car is eligible, there are five different levels of comprehensive coverage plans to choose from.

Engine Plan Powertrain Plan Silver Plan Gold Plan Platinum Plan
Front-Wheel Drive
Rear-Wheel Drive
Electric Motor Components
Front Suspension
Air Conditioning
Anti-Lock Brake System
Power Seat Motors
Instrument Displays
Vehicle Sensors

All AutoNation extended warranty plans are serviced by independent third-party administrators. Other plan features include:

  • Transferable, but only within 30 days
  • Honored nationwide at more than 70,000 licensed repair facilities across the US and Canada
  • Must be bought at the point of purchase with an AutoNation vehicle

An AutoNation extended warranty includes additional benefits such as emergency roadside assistance and rental car reimbursement up to $35 per day for 10 days. If your car breaks down away from home with a covered repair, you will be reimbursed for travel expenses up to $200 per day for five days.

The AutoNation extended warranty plans have these exclusions:

  • Replacement tires
  • The appearance of the vehicle
  • Dent
  • Windshield
  • Theft protection
  • Routine maintenance

Additional Plans

To provide coverage to the exclusions listed above, AutoNation offers several additional maintenance plans that are available as add-ons to your extended warranty coverage plan.

  • Dent protection plan
  • Tire and wheel protection plan
  • Windshield protection plan
  • Guaranteed asset protection (GAP) coverage
  • Excess wear-and-tear protection for leased vehicles
  • Prepaid maintenance coverage for tasks such as oil changes, replacing light bulbs, or tire rotations
  • Appearance protection which covers exterior paint, unavoidable dents, and interior surfaces

All vehicle service plans come with conditions. Those imposed by AutoNation extended warranty contracts are standard.

In order to keep your contract valid, you can’t apply aftermarket modifications. You are also expected to maintain the factory-recommended service schedule at your own expense. Damages resulting from neglect, non-standard use, and collisions aren’t covered.

When you have a problem with your vehicle, you must bring it to a repair facility and provide teardown authorization. You will be reimbursed for this diagnostic only if the repairs are covered by the warranty. Otherwise, you have to pay for it yourself.

Quotes and Claims Processes

To receive a quote for a specific vehicle, you must contact an AutoNation dealer. You can do this in person or through the AutoNation website. The AutoNation website includes an instant messaging feature that we found to have a very fast response rate.

If you decide to purchase an AutoNation extended warranty, it comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee. You can cancel after this time period and pay a prorated amount for the days your contract was active.

If a breakdown occurs, contact a claims administrator. You’ll be asked to authorize teardown service before getting approval for repairs.

AutoNation Ratings and Reviews

AutoNation has been in business for 24 years and is accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) where it currently holds an A- rating.

In the past three years, there have been more than 278 customer complaints filed against AutoNation with the BBB, only several of which relate to an AutoNation extended warranty. For a business as large as AutoNation and for a car warranty provider, this is a low number of complaints.

Customers who complained were mostly upset about the limited scope of warranty coverage or dealerships themselves. AutoNation is good about addressing customer complaints, and many are resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.

Below, we provide both positive and negative reviews to help give you a full picture of the customer experience.

Positive AutoNation Reviews

“Wonderful service! I got one of the best, no-hassle, and extremely professional service from sales associates. I am a satisfied customer. He ensured that I was heard and catered to what I needed in a vehicle. Thanks again to the team, I am well pleased.” – Youlanda T. via BBB

“The AutoNation Honda in Hollywood, Florida car dealer and service department provided me with nothing but excellent and amazing customer service during my visit this week. My car was serviced fast and very reasonably priced.” – Soraya H. via BBB

Negative AutoNation Reviews

“I was told the cost of a repair was much higher than it was and I should sell my car at a very low price to them and buy another…Sad to have this happen.” – Andrew L. via BBB

“Too bad zero stars isn’t an option. I have been trying since October to get AutoNation to issue my refund for the GAP policy that I canceled since I sold my car. I have called the dealership multiple times and no one will return my calls. I have also contacted the regional office multiple times and still no contact.” – Krista Y. via BBB

AutoNation Extended Warranty: 3.3 Stars

AutoNation stands out due to its customer service reputation and a wide variety of coverage options. Among auto warranty providers, it appears to do a relatively strong job of addressing customer complaints and honestly servicing contracts.

However, AutoNation services come at a price. Compared to other providers, AutoNation is very pricey and costs more than what most people reported paying in our survey. AutoNation extended warranty costs are not outside the normal price range for expansive coverage, but it is certainly high-end. You are likely to find cheaper options elsewhere.

The biggest drawback to an AutoNation extended warranty is that it must be bought with your vehicle at the point of sale. Other warranty providers can offer you warranties at any time.

If you are purchasing a new car, it is probably not worth buying the AutoNation extended warranty. Your car will already be covered under a manufacturer’s warranty, and you can always buy an extended warranty from another provider later. Also be aware that when you purchase an extended warranty though AutoNation, the price of the warranty could be rolled into your vehicle’s financing. This means you end up paying interest on the price of your warranty (unless you secure a 0 percent APR deal).

If you are buying a used car from AutoNation that has already exceeded the manufacturer’s warranty, an AutoNation extended warranty may be worth a look.
