What Does a Genesis Extended Warranty Cover?

The Genesis extended warranty is formally known as the Genesis Protection Plan Vehicle Service Contract. It covers over 1,500 parts for up to 10 years/120,000 miles from your car’s original in-service date. Genesis also offers two maintenance programs: the Pre-Paid Scheduled Maintenance Plus and the Terms Protection Plus.

Genesis Extended Warranty Coverage Term
Vehicle Service Contract 10 years/120,000 miles
Gold up to 5 years/75,000 miles
Powertrain Plus up to 4 years/60,000 miles

Some manufacturers provide a few different vehicle service contract options to choose from, but there’s only one extended warranty plan for Genesis drivers. The level of protection provided by the warranty falls somewhere between typical powertrain coverage and a bumper-to-bumper warranty

Parts of the following systems are covered under the Genesis extended warranty:

  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Drivetrain
  • Fuel system
  • Electrical
  • Climate control
  • Steering
  • Brakes
  • Suspension
  • Navigation
  • Audio
  • High-tech components

Additional Perks

The Genesis extended warranty comes with roadside assistance for the duration of the contract. This program covers flat tire services, fuel deliveries, lockout assistance, battery jump-starts, and towing.

Beyond roadside assistance, the plan includes rental car reimbursement of $35 per day for up to 10 days while your vehicle is in the shop for a covered repair. It also provides trip interruption coverage at $200 per day for up to five days. This reimburses you for things like meals and lodging if your vehicle breaks down far from your home and needs to be kept overnight while covered repairs are completed.

The Genesis extended warranty is transferable to a new vehicle owner if you sell your car before the plan expires.

What’s Not Included

The Genesis extended warranty, while comprehensive, won’t cover every breakdown or type of damage. The contract only covers the specific parts listed on it, and there’s also a list of additional exclusions. For example, it doesn’t include:

  • Damage from misuse or lack of maintenance
  • Damage from the environment or accidents
  • Wear items like brake pads
  • Regular maintenance services
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Cosmetic items or damage to glass or paint

Also, be aware that you need to go to a Genesis dealership (or participating Hyundai dealership) for service.

Do You Need Genesis Extended Warranty Coverage?

Genesis is part of the Hyundai Motor Company. Originally, the Hyundai Genesis was a model within the Hyundai lineup. In 2017, Genesis became its own brand and began adding more vehicle options.

The J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Vehicle Dependability StudySM ranked Genesis above all other vehicle brands for overall dependability. The study measured the frequency of problems in three-year-old vehicles, and Genesis drivers reported 34 percent fewer problems than the industry average.

That said, no vehicle is immune to breakdowns. At some point, you’ll need to take your Genesis in for vehicle repairs. Depending on your vehicle’s age and your budget, you’ll have to decide if an extended car warranty is worth it to cover repairs after your factory warranty expires.

Genesis Repair Costs

According to’s True Cost to Own® calculator, you can expect to pay about $1,639 in repairs (not including maintenance) over the next five years if you purchased a 2018 Genesis G80 today. In comparison, you’d pay about $2,135 for repairs on a 2018 Lexus ES 350, and $5,624 for repairs on a 2018 Audi A6.

These numbers aren’t an exact prediction, but the comparison between brands is useful. Genesis vehicles have yet to be featured on most industry repair cost websites because of how new they are. If Genesis turns out to be like Lexus (the luxury division of Honda), we can expect the vehicles to be reliable with low maintenance costs.

Genesis Factory and Certified Pre-Owned Warranties

The warranty on a new Genesis matches the Hyundai warranty, which makes sense, as it’s Hyundai’s luxury division. This means the Genesis warranty is one of the best new car warranties in the business.

Genesis’ factory coverage consists of a bumper-to-bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty and a powertrain warranty. The warranty for certified pre-owned (CPO) Genesis vehicles also offers a good amount of coverage. Here’s a breakdown of these coverage terms:

Vehicle Genesis Warranty Type Genesis Warranty Length
New Bumper-to-bumper 5 years/60,000 miles
Powertrain 10 years/100,000 miles
Anti-perforation 1 year/unlimited miles
CPO Bumper-to-bumper 6 years/75,000 miles
Powertrain 10 years/100,000 miles

Be aware that the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranties are only available for original owners or CPO owners. If you buy a used Genesis that isn’t a CPO vehicle, the powertrain warranty shrinks to 5 years/60,000 miles.

Because the Genesis warranty is so long, you may not end up needing extended coverage. However, if you plan to keep your vehicle longer than 5 years/60,000 miles, it may be worth purchasing extra protection, if only for the added peace of mind it can bring.

Benefits of a Third-Party Genesis Warranty

In terms of coverage options and mileage limits, you can find more variety from independent extended warranty companies. One of the main limitations of the Genesis extended warranty is that there is only one option for coverage. In contrast, leading third-party providers can offer five or six different plans that can also last much longer than Genesis’ 10-year/120,000-mile coverage cap.

For example, if you wanted to cover the powertrain on your Genesis for 150,000 miles, you could do so through a third-party provider. Or, you could purchase coverage after your factory warranty expires, which the Genesis warranty doesn’t allow. This can be particularly useful if you purchased a used Genesis with a shorter powertrain warranty of 5 years/60,000 miles.

Lastly, you can go to any licensed repair facility of your choice with a third-party vehicle service contract. That’s a nice option, and it gives you more flexibility to choose a mechanic based on customer service or location. Here’s a head-to-head comparison between the Genesis extended warranty and one of the industry’s leading third-party providers, Endurance:

Genesis Extended Warranty Endurance Extended Warranty

Final Thoughts on the Genesis Extended Warranty

Driving a can be a thrilling experience, and since the brand is a division of Hyundai, you can count on years of reliability. The Genesis extended warranty offers a fair amount of protection for a certain amount of time. If you don’t plan on driving your Genesis far beyond the expiration of your factory warranty, it could be a decent option.
