Table of contents
CARCHEX opened its doors in 1999, making it one of the longest-running companies in the extended warranty industry. Warranty plans are available in all 50 states. This is noteworthy because none of the other companies that made our best extended warranty providers list are available in all 50 states.
CARCHEX made the Inc. 5000 list eight times as one of the fastest-growing companies in the US. Because of this, the company is a Hall of Fame honoree, something that only two percent of all companies that have applied for this recognition can claim. CARCHEX also received a Top Workplaces Award from the Baltimore Sun for seven consecutive years.
In addition to its numerous industry awards, CARCHEX holds a number of significant partnerships, including partnerships with CARFAX, Kelley Blue Book, RepairPal, and Edmunds.com. It is also the only company in our top four extended warranty providers that earned an A+ BBB rating and accreditation.
CARCHEX Extended Car Warranty Coverage
CARCHEX offers five different service plans. You can read a high-level description of each of these below.
- Titanium plan: The highest level of coverage available, similar to a bumper-to-bumper warranty
- Platinum plan: Covers hundreds of specific components from all major systems of your vehicle
- Gold plan: Covers many components from all major systems of your vehicle
- Silver plan: Provides coverage for the essential systems of your vehicle
- Bronze plan: Suitable for high-mileage vehicles and designed to protect you from the most common and expensive repairs to the engine and transmission
All CARCHEX plans have a 30-day cancellation policy. Customers can receive a full refund if they cancel within 30 days, or a prorated refund if they cancel after 30 days, provided no claims have been submitted.
In addition to helping with repair costs, an extended vehicle protection plan with CARCHEX offers a number of benefits to customers that purchase an extended car warranty, including:
- Emergency roadside assistance
- Rental car reimbursement
- Towing benefits
- Trip interruption benefits
There are a few exclusions that are common to almost every extended warranty provider in the industry, and they stand true for CARCHEX. These include:
CARCHEX Auto Warranty Cost
CARCHEX car warranties vary in cost depending on many factors, including vehicle make, model, and mileage. Our team reached out for a quote for a 2017 Ford Explorer with 45,000 miles and found we would pay $202.89 per month for 18 months for exclusionary coverage.
We also asked about a powertrain plus plan for the same vehicle and were quoted at $165.78 for 18 months.
|Plan Name||Term Length||Monthly Payment||Down Payment||Deductible|
|2017 Ford Explorer||Titanium||5 years/
for 18 months
|No down payment||$100|
|2017 Ford Explorer||Silver||5 years/
for 18 months
|No down payment||$100|
These extended car warranty quotes were slightly more expensive than quotes we received from Endurance and CarShield for the same vehicle and coverage level. However, they also provided coverage for a greater number of years and miles than Endurance.
Quotes and Claims Processes
Our review team tested the CARCHEX quotes process by submitting an online quote form for the 2017 Ford Explorer. We then called CARCHEX. Since the salesperson already had our information, the phone call only took four minutes total with a wait time of less than one minute.
We tested the process again by submitting a form for a 2013 Dodge Caravan with 88,000 miles, and we did not call in immediately. One day later, a CARCHEX representative emailed to request additional information, such as the vehicle identification number (VIN) and how many miles were driven each year. These questions show that CARCHEX customer service is committed to finding the best extended warranty plan for your unique circumstances. We later connected over the phone to complete the quote.
As for CARCHEX’s claims process, it is relatively easy. Here are the steps needed to submit a claim for a CARCHEX extended warranty:
- Take the vehicle to one of more than 30,000 certified repair facilities nationwide.
- Authorize the repair shop to diagnose the vehicle.
- Have the facility contact CARCHEX’s claims department to receive approval.
- Pay the applicable deductible.
CARCHEX Reviews and Ratings
As with most extended car warranty companies, CARCHEX reviews are mixed. The company holds an “Average” rating on Trustpilot based on over 1,400 customer reviews, earning a 3.3-star average rating. Based on CARCHEX’s high BBB rating, many partnerships, and awards, however, it is a reputable provider.
Here are a few sample positive and negative CARCHEX reviews:
Positive CARCHEX Reviews:
“Steve of CARCHEX was a pleasure to work with. I have not used my service yet, but it seems a good value for the price. I have peace of mind knowing I have [a] CARCHEX warranty on my vehicle. Thank you!”
– Marie Waters via Trustpilot
“Great prices and great customer service! [I] would recommend it to anyone looking for an extended warranty on their vehicle.”
– Horacio S. via BBB
Negative CARCHEX Reviews:
“I just purchased a warranty. Hopefully [CARCHEX] stands behind the contract. [CARCHEX] is really pushy to get you to sign with the company. However, the guy I worked with was really nice.”
– Paige W. via Trustpilot
“I called to get a quote on my new car, and I dealt with a very pushy salesman. I told him I just wanted a quote, background on the company, to go over their plans, and then to call a few other places to compare.”
– Shannon F. via BBB

Here are two other top providers to consider getting free quotes from.
Endurance: 4.9 Stars
Our review team gave Endurance the highest overall star rating and also the superlative of Best Coverage. Endurance is the only company on our best extended warranty providers list to make the 2020 Inc. 5000. In addition, the Endurance Elite Membership that comes with any Endurance auto warranty provides the best benefits in the industry, including two tire replacements and/or repairs and a personal concierge assistant.
Endurance sponsored Jarett Andretti’s McLaren in the Pirelli GT4 American Sprint series and is backed by an AM Best A-rated insurance company. For those reasons, Endurance is a top choice among extended car warranty providers.
Endurance is our pick for best direct provider with its comprehensive coverage options.
CarShield: 4.6 Stars
CarShield offers the lowest monthly cost on average among all of our top providers. For that reason, we recognized CarShield for having the Best Budget Warranty. CarShield has sold extended car warranties since 2005 and is by far one of the most popular extended auto warranty companies in the nation. Its administrators have paid over $1 billion in claims to customers and covered over a million vehicles. To learn more, read our in-depth CarShield review.
Our research found this provider to be the most affordable. Plus, it offers monthly plans.
You can also purchase an extended warranty from the dealership. However, dealership warranties have several drawbacks including limited coverage for used cars, limited choice of repair shops, shorter contract terms, and fewer options for payment plans.
