Hyundai Used Car Warranty Overview

Because Hyundai factory warranty coverage is transferable between owners, you may already have Hyundai used car warranty coverage if you purchased a pre-owned vehicle. However, the term length for a Hyundai used car warranty may be reduced upon transfer.

Hyundai calls its factory warranty “America’s Best Warranty,” and not without reason. Hyundai factory warranty coverage extends a bit further than most other factory warranties. When you purchase a new Hyundai, it includes the following guarantees:

  • 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty
  • 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty (bumper-to-bumper coverage)
  • 7-year/unlimited-mile anti-perforation warranty
  • 5 years of roadside assistance
  • 1-year/12,000-mile replacement parts and accessories warranty
  • 8-year/80,000-mile federal emission defect and performance warranty
  • 7-year/70,000-mile California emissions control system warranty

Hyundai electric and hybrid vehicles also come with the following warranties:

  • Lifetime hybrid/electric battery warranty (for 2012 to 2019 models)
  • 10-year/100,000-mile hybrid system components warranty

These warranties come standard with all new Hyundai vehicles at no additional cost. If a covered component is damaged during the coverage period, Hyundai will cover all labor and repair costs. All you’re expected to pay is the deductible.

If a Hyundai vehicle is sold during the original 10-year powertrain coverage period, the new owner will receive protection for the remainder of the coverage period or for 5 years/60,000 miles—whichever comes first. This means that if you transfer coverage with three years remaining, the new owner will have three years of Hyundai used car warranty coverage. If you transfer coverage while eight years remain, the new owner will only have five years of coverage.

The Hyundai lifetime hybrid/electric battery warranty is reduced to 10 years/100,000 miles upon transfer.

What Does a Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Certified pre-owned (CPO) Hyundais are protected by the remainder of Hyundai’s new vehicle limited factory warranty. This means that the Hyundai certified pre-owned warranty covers hundreds of components throughout the vehicle.

If you have a CPO Hyundai newer than five model years old and with fewer than 60,000 miles, you have the following Hyundai used car warranties:

  • Remainder of Hyundai’s 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited factory warranty
  • 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty
  • 10-year/100,000-mile hybrid/EV battery warranty
  • 10 years of roadside assistance

Hyundai CPO warranties are not transferable. If you sell your CPO Hyundai, the new owner won’t automatically receive any Hyundai used car warranty coverage.

What Does a Hyundai Extended Warranty Cover?

When you purchase a new Hyundai, you have the option to buy an extended warranty from the manufacturer that can add on up to an additional 10 years or 100,000 miles of coverage. Specific component coverage for each plan is described by the following chart:

Powertrain Gold Platinum

All plans are transferable and include the following benefits:

  • Towing to nearest Hyundai dealer
  • Rental car reimbursement of $35 per day for up to 10 days
  • Trip interruption of $200 per day for up to five days
  • Guaranteed use of Hyundai genuine replacement parts

Drivers purchasing a CPO Hyundai can also opt for CPO wrap coverage. This extended coverage is available in two packages: Gold and Platinum. The systems and components covered by each Hyundai used car warranty plan are described in the following chart:

Third-Party Hyundai Warranties

If you’re looking for a Hyundai used car warranty, there is always the option of purchasing an extended warranty from a third-party provider. Third-party coverage can be purchased at any time, not just when you buy your vehicle. There may even be cases in which a warranty company is the only option for a Hyundai used car warranty, such as for older Hyundais.

The chart that follows outlines some of the key differences between a Hyundai extended warranty from the dealership and an extended vehicle protection plan from Endurance, our top recommended third-party provider.

Hyundai Extended Warranty Endurance Extended Warranty

Third-party warranties do not always offer the same level of protection, but they often have more flexible coverage options. With a third-party warranty, you can take your vehicle to any ASE-Certified mechanic instead of having to go exclusively to a dealership.
