BMW South Carolina One Of America's Top Green Power Generators
Full of crap? Not exactly, but as it turns out BMW‘s Spartansburg, South Carolina plant gets over 37% of its power from methane gas harvested and compressed from a local landfill, which is enough to land it a solid 4th place rating on the EPA’s Top 20 Green Power Partners list.
“BMW Manufacturing is leading the way by using renewable energy sources,” said Elizabeth Craig, a director at the EPA. “Their actions are helping to protect air quality and green our power supply.”
The statistics for the methane power generation program are impressive: BMW claims that it has reduced CO2 emissions by 92,000 tons a year, which also saves the company $5 million in energy costs. The company invested over $12 million into the program since 2003, and it’s paid off by generating 37 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, the highest proportion of green power on the EPA’s top 10 list.
The Spartansburg plant builds the X3, X5 and X6 SUVs, and for at least one of those, the poo analogy is apt.
