Set to go on sale in early 2013 to replace the RL, Acura’s RLX sedan will arrive at dealerships looking slightly different than the concept we saw in New York if the patent images here are, in fact, the production model.
Should that prove to be true, we’ll have a new flagship from Acura that looks an awful lot like the TL from the front, while taking on a side profile and rear end that’s almost reminiscent of a BMW. Acura promises, however, that this won’t be like any other car it’s released in the past, at least in terms of interior space. The RLX is said to offer much more room than the RL it replaces, something that was a key complaint on the last generation range topper.
The car will get its power from a direct-injection 3.5-liter V6 engine along with three electric motors that will produce more than 370 hp, with one of the three working directly with the gas engine while the other two power the rear wheels. Those figures, of course, apply to the version with Acura’s next-generation super-handling all-wheel drive (SH-AWD).
Customers will also be able to opt for a car with 310 hp and no SH-AWD, which will be less expensive. The car has yet to make its debut in production form, and with the LA Auto Show being the only remaining event on the 2012 calendar, that might be where the car takes its bow.
