About 72,500 model year 2006-2008 Kia Rio’s are being recalled for a faulty occupant classification system mat, located in the front driver seat.

The sensor mat in the passenger seat can crack after repeated use and stop functioning. If this occurs, the occupant classification system will not function properly and not be able to detect whether the seat’s occupant is a child or an adult. The system is meant to stop the airbag from deploying if there is a child present, but because of the faulty mat, in a collision situation the airbag will deploy possibly causing harm to the child.

Kia will notify affected owners, and will replace the fault sensor mats free of charge. For more information you can contact the NHTSA safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
