Irvin Gordon loves his 1966 Volvo P1800S; so much in fact that the pair is close to traveling 3,000,000 miles together.

The classic Volvo coupe is a mere 34,000 miles from its milestone: an achievement that will likely remain untouched for years, if not decades, to come. Gordon hopes to hit the three-millionth mark by next year as the 72-year-old continues to drive it everywhere, growing his Guinness World Record mark for High Mileage Vehicle that he’s held since 2002.

“I have a feeling I’ll be dead long before the car,” Gordon said.

Gordon is the original owner of the 1966 Volvo, purchased brand new on June 30th of that year when he was just 25 years old – it cost him $4,150. Unfortunately his odometer doesn’t have enough numbers to display the actual mileage, but Gordon has meticulously kept records to verify the high mileage. He continues to take road trips all across the nation and claims he averages 85,000 to 100,000 miles a year.

The Volvo mostly makes journeys to car shows around the country, but Gordon will even drive just for a nice cup of coffee. Of course regular maintenance is part of Gordon’s routine to keep the Volvo on the road, but he wouldn’t have it any other way.
