A devastating crash has halted festivities on the eve of the Daytona 500 with wreckage from a crash on the final lap of the Drive4COPD 300 sending 11 fans to hospital.

The wreck sent car #32 of rookie Kyle Larson into the air and along the catch fence. Along with tearing the car apart, debris was sent flying into the grandstands. Perhaps most shocking, the huge V8 engine got caught up in the fence but came to a rest on the other side of the concrete barrier.

The 11 injured fans were transported to the nearby Halifax Medical Center, with six of those admitted said to have suffered trauma related injuries, though all are in stable condition.

Taking the checkered flag in the race was Tony Stewart.

UPDATE: Officials later said there were a total 33 people injured as a result of the crash.

As far as I can tell there are plenty of high-speed crashes in NASCAR that send cars flying in crazy ways, but this one was more like a freak accident. If the high fences aren't enough to protect fans, they might have to eventually look into things like air restrictors in order to limit horsepower and that way limit the speed.
