Ford Sees Major Growth in 'Super Segment' Vehicles
Ford is rolling four key vehicle segments – subcompact, compact, small utility vehicles, and midsize sedans – into one, naming it the super segment.
That super segment, is what Ford is focusing on for growth in the United States with its Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, and Escape models leading the way. According to the American automaker, the super segment makes up 50 percent of new vehicle sales nationwide, up from 35 percent in 2004.

Two-thirds of all buyers shop the Escape and Fusion when they first come into a Ford dealership, both of which have gotten off to very strong starts since being revamped last year. Combined sales of the Escape and Fusion totaled 51,985 units in February 2013. The Ford Escape has been the best-selling small utility vehicle in the U.S. for the past two months.
The Ford Fiesta on the other hand, was the best-selling subcompact in the world, and was number five overall in global sales. Through the first two months of the year, Ford’s share of the super segment is at a record high 12.7 percent, more than double its share in 2005. Over a seven year span from 2005-2012, Ford brand sales in the super segment went up 123 percent.
