Looking to grow into a more mainstream luxury brand, Maserati today unveiled its new mid-size luxury sedan ahead of a planned debut at the Shanghai Motor Show later this month.

Calling it a “four-door sports executive saloon” the oddly named Ghibli will slot in beneath the Quattroporte in the Maserati lineup, providing a sexy Italian alternative to cars like the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. While pricing isn’t expected for quite some time, expect the Ghibli compete at the very high-end of the segment.

Powered by a choice of two 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engines and using an 8-speed automatic transmission, one engine option will be gasoline while the other will be a diesel. In fact, this will mark the first time a Maserati has ever been offered with a diesel.

Making the Ghibli more unique is the fact that it will also be available as either rear-wheel drive or an all-new Q4 all-wheel drive system.

Expectations are high for the new sports sedan, with Maserati predicting a massive spike in sales from roughly 6,300 units to a goal of 50,000.
