The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is fast, but we never expected it to put something like a V10 supercar in jeopardy of losing its crown.

The last time we set a lap record at our home test track, the Audi R8 V10 Plus laid down a 1:18.449. That car costs $187,590 or more than 2.6 times the price of the Corvette in question. Despite the massive price difference, Chevrolet’s new sports car recorded a 1:18.87 lap, coming fractions of a second within beating Audi’s crazy dual-clutch supercar.

Bear in mind, the Corvette’s lap time was managed in a car with a manual transmission, which suggests that a stick-equipped version of the same R8 might actually be slower than the new Stingray on this course.

But those are hypothetical scenarios and the real thing is always better. Thankfully, there were cameras rolling during the lap.
