This week, good old American muscle was the top pick, followed closely by practical crossovers and the new Mercedes CLA-Class.

The 2015, yes 2015, Dodge Challenger was the most popularly researched car this week on AutoGuide.com. Dodge’s muscle car is getting an extensive makeover for the 2015 model year and the company is stopping at nothing to promote its new range topper, which is powered by a 707-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V8. It looks like the plan worked, because people are shopping for Challys.

Closely behind it, the Honda CR-V was also a popular choice this week. With practicality and middle-of-the-road features, it’s a safe bet that people tend to take because of its predictability. But being proven on the market isn’t everything, or so it seems because behind Honda’s well-known utility vehicle lies something much newer: the Mercedes CLA-Class. WIth a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed dual clutch transmission, the front-wheel drive Benz breaks many of the German luxury world’s traditional rules. But for a starting price of about $30,000, there still seem to be plenty of takers.

Moseying back toward a more traditional approach, the Toyota Highlander mid-size crossover was also a hot topic. With three rows of seats and three different powertrains are available. There’s a four-cylinder, a six-cylinder and even a hybrid model to choose from.

Finally, the Mazda CX-5 compact crossover reigns things in with more city-friendly proportions and a duo of four-cylinder engines. It is available with either a 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter mill and can even come with a manual transmission if you choose the smaller of those two powerplants. Front- or all-wheel drive are also both available on the CX-5 although the biggest standout with Mazda’s small people mover is probably its stylish body.
