2015 Ford F-150 Payload, Tow Ratings Announced

Ford announced official towing and payload ratings for the 2015 F-150 pickup truck today, boasting best-in-class status on both counts.

The company said its new half-ton can carry up to 3,300 lbs and is able to tow a maximum 12,200 lbs thanks in large part to weight savings tied directly to weight savings realized through aluminum body panels. In all configurations, the company said its new truck is 700 lbs lighter than the model it replaces, which will also help it to be at least five percent more fuel efficient than the old model and up to 20 percent more efficient.

Models equipped with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 – by far the engine with the greatest market penetration – comes with a maximum payload rating of 3,180 lbs and is rated to tow the maximum 12,200 lbs that Ford announced today. V8-equipped models can handle the 3,300 max payload rating Ford announced today and come with a lower max tow rating of 11,100 lbs, which is still an improvement of 1,100 lbs over the previous model.

Ford said the trucks will begin arriving at dealers later in the year following a preview event being held with the media this week.

When it arrives in showrooms, Ford will not only be pitching the new pickup as a more efficient and capable competitor in the half-ton class, but as a truck with particularly sophisticated available technology. An optional 360-degree camera will make it easier for drivers to fit the truck into tight spaces in much the same way that Nissan offers its “AroundView” monitoring system on its cars and SUVs. The camera equipment is also designed to make navigating tight sections in off-road courses easier and to simplify connecting the hitch to a trailer.
