Chrysler 200 Might Offer Small Turbodiesel

Chrysler might bring another diesel engine to the U.S., this time under the hood of the 200 sedan.

A new 2.2-liter, 16-valve “DeTomaso” turbo diesel engine was spotted on Chrysler’s secure dealer website listed as a new powertrain configuration for the 2015 Chrysler 200. The dealer website, known as DealerConnect, allows dealers to access information on ordering new cars from the factory. The information was first spotted by a user on Allpar.com.

It just so happens that Alfa Romeo, another company under the FCA umbrella, is currently developing a small 2.2-liter common rail turbodiesel that will put out somewhere between 135 and 210 hp. If Alfa plans to share the engine, the Chrysler 200 would be perfectly suited to take on the Volkswagen Passat diesel that makes 140 hp.

As for the “DeTomaso” name, Automotive News speculates that it might be a red herring to hide the true nature of this engine. When asked about the engine, Eric Mayne, FCA’s powertrain spokesman denied its existence.

Chrysler already offers diesel engines in the U.S. under the hood of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ram ProMaster and the whole Ram truck lineup.
