VW Golf R400 Production Confirmed

After much speculation, the high-power Volkswagen Golf R400 has been confirmed for production…again.

The car was already confirmed once before, but after that report came out it became clear that the R400 didn’t actually have the green light yet. That has now changed. “We have the Golf more sporty than ever before, since we soon will have the Golf R400 – we will do this car,” VW group powertrain chief Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser told Car. “We are in fact in development of it right now.”

Power for this hyper hot hatch will come from a high-output turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that will make right around 400 hp, accelerating the small car from to 0 to 62 mph in around 3.9 seconds. Just like the VW Golf R, the R400 will be all-wheel drive. Of course, to go along with the added power, beefed up brakes will be added.

In terms of the looks, the R400 will set itself apart form other Golfs thanks to a new spoiler and a revised aero pack that includes bigger splitters and likely a few other added bits of bodywork.

The car is expected to make its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September of this year. Pricing on the car will likely sit between $45,000 and $50,000, as the Golf R already tops out right at $40,000. This car will come to the U.S., as recently Neusser said that he would like to “show America how sporty the Golf can be.”

key to this car's success is keeping the price down...nobody is going to buy a $50K Golf IMO.
