Saab Owner NEVS Announces New Lineup
The Saab nameplate may not be dead in the automotive market.
National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) acquired the assets of bankrupt Saab in 2012 and went on to form an alliance with several Chinese automakers, the benefits of which we are about to see, as NEVS is preparing to release a new lineup or vehicles based on Saab’s Phoenix platform.
NEVS president Mattias Bergman made the announcement at the Stora Bildagen automotive conference in Sweden. The four vehicles will be made up of three crossovers and a sedan with fastback styling. Alongside these four new vehicles, the Saab 9-3 will be produced sporting an all-electric powertrain.
It isn’t clear yet whether the new vehicles will be badged as Saabs or as NEVS, as the Saab nameplate belongs to a consortium of Swedish companies.
NEVS plans to start production of the electric 9-3 at the former Saab plant in Trollhättan by 2017, while the rest of the vehicle lineup will begin production a year later in both Sweden and China.
Sweden and China will get the cars initially, though expansion to Europe and the US is part of the plan.
