Honda Has Big Goals for Electric Vehicle Sales
Honda is planning a big push into electrified vehicles.
The brand is aiming for two thirds of its global sales, made up of Honda and Acura vehicles, to be represented by hybrids, plug-ins, fuel cell vehicles and battery electric vehicles by 2030. Based on Honda’s current U.S. sales rate, that would be roughly one million electrified vehicles being sold by Honda in the USA each year.
As of June 2016, Honda has only moved 2,329 hybrids in the U.S., showing the long uphill battle the brand has ahead of it. Currently, Honda sells the Accord hybrid, Acura RLX, Acura NSX and whatever units are left of the discontinued CR-Z hybrid. An Acura MDX hybrid is expected to join the lineup soon.

Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo believes that hybrid sales in the U.S. can do even better than two thirds. “For the U.S. as well, we will be deploying plug-ins as the core and bringing in other electrified technology,” Hachigo told Automotive News. “The ratio will be far higher in the U.S.”
In the short term future, Honda plans to roll out a new plug-in hybrid sedan in 2017 which will be part of a trio of cars badged as the Clarity lineup. The first car in the lineup will be the hydrogen fuel-cell powered Clarity sedan which should hit the market this year. An all-electric Clarity will round out the three-car lineup.
A new Civic hybrid and CR-V hybrid are both expected to arrive before 2020.
