Don't Rule Out Inline-Six Engines for Aston Martin

A six-cylinder engine from AMG could be used in an Aston Martin.

Now that the British automaker has introduced a DB11 model with a V8 engine sourced from Mercedes-AMG, Aston Martin isn’t ruling out the possibility of using a six-cylinder engine as part of the technical partnership with the German automaker. Mercedes has a new family of inline-six-cylinder engines, and Aston Martin may have to turn to them as fuel consumption regulations continue to become more strict worldwide.

Speaking at the DB11 V8 launch in Spain, DB11 vehicle line director Paul Barritt indicated Aston Martin isn’t ruling anything out just yet. “We’re watching everything that they’re doing, and there are certain things in place [within the agreement] but not everything,” he said. “We will just keep a watching brief and see what fits in with our plans. You can see the direction of travel within the industry and we’d be foolish not to be looking at the sixes, and we’re still looking at eights and twelves.”

It is believed Mercedes-AMG is currently working on a hybrid powertrain featuring a twin-turbo, inline-six engine and it could be something Aston Martin considers using. Barritt also admitted Aston Martin doesn’t care so much on whether it’s an inline-six or a V6, saying the brand isn’t bothered by the configuration.

inline vs V also means half as many valvetrains timing chains head gaskets and two less camshafts.
