It’s sounding more and more like the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class will bow at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.

Over the past year, spy photographers have caught the new G-Class testing numerous times, sporting a similar style as the existing model which has seen very little changes in nearly four decades. So it won’t be a big surprise when the new G-Class debuts next year with a familiar overall profile that has become iconic over the years.

But that doesn’t mean the G-Class won’t benefit from major changes. The SUV is expected to ride on a new platform that will help shed weight, making it lighter than ever.

From what we have seen from spy photos, the new G-Class will be wider than its predecessor, increasing interior and cargo space. There should also be new powertrain options available under the hood, improving fuel economy and overall performance. There is also a high-performance AMG variant in the works, as one user on YouTube has captured it on camera testing with a new Panamericana grille up front.

Inside the cabin, expect to see all the same high-tech features currently found in Mercedes-Benz models, including a digital instrument panel.

I thought the G-Class as a whole was going to be phased out a few weeks ago? So it seems the "look" will be phased out and not the class... nice.
