A prototype for what’s believed to be a Hyundai Elantra EV has been spied testing.

Revealing this prototype as an Elantra EV was its silent operation and lack of an exhaust pipe. It’s also fitted with the aerodynamically optimized wheels seen on other Hyundai EV models.

The Korean automaker has been rumored to have an electrified Elantra in the works, although it’s not clear if it will make it to North America. Last year it was reported the automaker was working on an Elantra EV for China only, which would help it meet the country’s tightening emissions regulations. China is considered to be the world’s fastest growing and largest market for EVs.

Not much is known about the Elantra EV, but we’re expecting to see it sometime in 2019.
