Ford GT Gets an Additional 350 Unit Production Run

With demand far outstripping availability, Ford is increasing the number of GT supercars it’s planning to offer.

The initial run was limited to just 1,000 units, making this race-bred machine a true modern-day exotic. But to greater serve customers, they’re planning to build 350 more, increasing availability by around a third.

But not just anyone can waltz into a Ford store and pick up one of these beauties like they would a Fiesta hatchback. The folks in Dearborn have been extremely selective with the people they’re allowing to buy one.

Of that 1,350-unit total, roughly 660 customers have been given the opportunity to purchase an example, which has left scores of would-be buyers out in the cold. More than 6,500 people applied to get one in the first round of sales.

To allocate the remainder of this enhanced production run, Ford is reopening the application process. Would-be GT owners residing in select global markets can apply to purchase one of the supercars starting on November 8. These prospects will have 30 days to sign up before the automaker once again stops talking applications. Would-be owners can apply at www.FordGT.com.

Enthusiasts lucky enough the be given an opportunity to spend their hard-earned cash on one will be contacted by a special concierge that will work with them throughout the purchase process. They can expect to take delivery between calendar years 2020 and 2022, so don’t get too excited to drive one just yet. Production is expected to run for about six years. Base price is right around $500,000 (approximately $654,000 Canadian).

Curiously, the GT is not assembled by Ford, rather a supplier company called Multimatic builds it in Ontario, Canada, not far from downtown Toronto. They have to ability to make about 250 examples of the car per year, which works out to roughly one a day when weekends and holidays are excluded from the calendar.

The Ford GT features a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine that delivers 647 horsepower and provides a top speed of 216 miles an hour (348 km/h).

This production increase is good news for enthusiasts of the Ford GT, but it remains to be seen how current owners will react to the news. Their cars’ shine of exclusivity is about to get just a little duller.
