The new Porsche 935 drew an incredible response from fans and customers, with the German automaker having already received hundreds of purchase requests for the limited edition track car.

Speaking to racing website Sportscar 365, Porsche Motorsport boss Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser said the positive reaction to the 935 caught them off guard.

“We expected it would be a big surprise but I didn’t expect it would go this crazy,” Walliser said. “But people are coming from all over the world saying, ‘We’ll order it.’”

Walliser said the company received 200 purchase requests for the 935 in the 48 hours following its debut. The 700 hp track special is limited to just 77 units, however, so Porsche will now have to select its preferred customers to receive the car.

“Now we have to sort out of everything,” he added. “I want to make a proper selection out of that.”

Walliser also told Sportscar 365 that demand for track day cars like the 935 is strong and that the company is exploring similar, additional projects. That was before they knew how successful the 935 programs was going to be, too, so now another high-priced Porsche track day car seems like an inevitability.

The 935 is based on the 991 911 GT2 RS and features carbon fiber bodywork inspired by the race-winning Porsche 935 ‘Moby Dick’ from the late 1970s. It also gets race-ready components such as lightweight centerlock wheels, slick tires, a huge rear wing, a roll cage, a 911 RSR steering wheel, a racing seat and race harness, a fire suppression system and more. Prices start at 701,948 euros, or just under $810,000 USD.
