Crossovers are king and the five-passenger XT5 wears the crown at Cadillac. The luxury brand’s global bestseller, this right-sized family hauler gains a new sport package for 2019

No, there’s nothing terribly exciting to report here, but this offering should give utility vehicle-obsessed customers a welcome bit of choice when strolling through showrooms.

Publicly unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show, the XT5 Sport is more aggressive than mainline models, dressed up with a gloss-black grille accented by brushed-metal trim. Up front, headlamps of the LED variety are standard while the tail light housings are rendered in clear plastic instead of red. Undoubtedly, Cadillac is looking to cash in on the sales success of the smaller XT4, which has been offered in a Sport model since its launch last year.

Side-assist steps are standard, as are 20-inch aluminum wheels treated to a gray finish. Inside, two colors are available including Cirrus or Jet Black. Both feature aluminum trim with a diamond-cut pattern. Special pedal finishers add a touch of, well, sport to this gussied-up XT5.

The Sport package is an offshoot of the Luxury and Premium Luxury trims, meaning vehicles are well equipped with amenities like remote start, a Bose eight-speaker sound system, leather appointments, a programmable-height liftgate and more.

On the tech front, Cadillac’s latest infotainment system is standard, displayed on an eight-inch touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality are embedded as well for maximum convenience.

Regrettably, in the mechanical department, nothing really changes here. Sport models feature a tried-and-true 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Standard cylinder deactivation helps reduce fuel consumption.

The 2019 Cadillac XT5 Sport edition goes on sale this spring. As a package, it adds $2,995 to Luxury-trim models or an additional $1,995 on top of Premium Luxury versions. Base price for an XT5 Luxury is $49,490 including destination charges.
