Acura doesn’t have the panache of competing luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz or BMW, nor does it have a reputation for rock-solid build quality like Lexus. Honda’s premium brand is still relatively popular in North America, though, selling just under 160,000 units in 2018.

Despite its relative popularity, some consumers may not know where Acura originates from or where it builds its cars, crossovers and SUVs today. Where is Acura From?

Much like Toyota with Lexus, the idea for the premium Acura brand was concocted by Honda after the Japanese government imposed export restraints on cars destined for the United States. Because Japanese brands could only export a certain number of cars each year, it made more sense for them to ship over profit-heavy luxury cars rather than inexpensive city cars like the Civic.

Honda allegedly conducted a decade of market research in the US before finally launching the Acura brand in 1987 with the Acura Legend sedan and the two and four-door Acura Integra. The Legend was a particular success and inspired competing brands like Lexus to streamline their introduction into the US market to capitalize on North American demand for the full-size luxury sedan at the time.

So while Acura serves as Honda’s premium sub-brand (Honda is based Tokyo, Japan today) it is really a North American brand, with almost all of its sales happening in the US and Canada.
