An interesting report has surfaced from the 33rd Vienna Motor Symposium that revealed Porsche has diesel powerplants firmly in its strategy, while electric vehicles are not.
Speaking at the conference, Porsche R&D chief Wolfgang Hatz revealed that the German automaker believes that pure electric vehicles are “not even close to series production with the current battery technology.” It’s a peculiar statement since Porsche announced that it would begin testing its Electric Boxster prototypes last year.
Perhaps Porsche isn’t pleased with the results so far, with Hatz stating that internal combustion engines will remain dominant in the foreseeable future and that the diesel is a firm part of the VW Group’s strategy currently. More importantly however, Hatz said, “There will be more powerful variations with Porsche-like performance.” He went on to add, “It would be wrong to say no to a Boxster diesel for all times.”
This of course raises questions about what Porsche’s diesel car strategy might be. There is, of course, the conventional fuel economy and budget-minded direction. Porsche, however, could look at diesel’s as a performance option, much like how BMW has just introduced a new M line of performance diesels.

Last Friday, Porsche became the latest global automaker to end business in Iran as strong political tensions and the threat of nuclear capability build in the country.
Two U.S.-based advocacy groups, The Iran Watch List and United Against a Nuclear Iran, launched a campaign against the Tehran regime in Iran when they found that the Iranian auto industry, the 13th largest in the world, is overrun by both members of the Iranian regime and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Now named the Macan, the German automaker will be releasing its top-of-the-line turbo variant with a new 3.0-liter, twin-turbo V6 powerplant believed to be based on the larger engine from the base-model Cayenne. The Macan Turbo will have 370 hp and aims to establish a niche as the fastest and most dynamic model in its class. Thanks to a pair of Borg Warner sequential turbos, it’s believed the 370 hp will be backed with 400 lb-ft of torque.
The Macan will be based on Volkswagen‘s new MLB platform with a V6 and an Audi-engineered, Torsen torque-sensing differential that Porsche has tweaked for the Macan to power all four wheels. Transmission choices will include a seven-speed manual, or an optional seven-speed, dual-clutch PDK.
“We’ve surprised even ourselves,” said Porsche development boss Wolfgang Hatz said about the Macan. “It drives incredibly well and, from what we’ve seen from the competition, will be the most sporting car in its class.”
In addition to the 3.0-liter V6, the Macan will be the first Porsche since 1995 to have a four-cylinder engine offering. Though it’s not confirmed, it’s widely believed that the base-model Macan will have a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with around 220 hp. A turbodiesel option may also come in the form of a 2.0-liter with 190 hp.

Due next year is an update for the highly controversial Porsche Panamera model, a restyling change that should make it more appealing to the eyes. But rumor has it that the German automaker has much more planned for its sedan in the near future.
The 2013 update should also bring a long wheelbase variant, which will undoubtedly be popular in China. But the interesting rumor is that Porsche could be working on shooting brake (wagon) and cabriolet variants for its Panamera model. Despite Porsche product planning wanting to bring the second-generation Panamera to market in 2015, the early revamp will surely bring more variants in order to extend the new lifecycle.
Industry spies are also predicting that Porsche will produce a smaller Panamera model, perhaps named Pajun, and could arrive in 2017 with two or three different body styles.
To compete with the BMW X6, Porsche may also be introducing a four-door coupe version of its next-generation Cayenne and could hit showroom floors in 2016.
While much of the above are just rumors, we can surely expect the second-generation Cayman later this year along with more variants of the new 911. Expected soon is the Carrera 4, 4S, Cabriolet 4, 4S, GTS, and Porsche may have a surprise with a 911 Targa in 2014. The 991 version of the 911 Clubsport, Turbo and Turbo S, GT3, and GT2 RS will probably still be a couple of years out.
