While it may seem like recent technology made for today’s connected cars, the in-vehicle touchscreen actually debuted way back in 1987 as a feature on the ‘87 Buick Riviera. From that first 3”x4” monochrome screen more than 30 years ago, touchscreens steadily evolved, eventually dominating vehicle interiors and putting total vehicle control at the driver’s fingertips. The rise of in-vehicle touchscreens introduced a new level of command and convenience, but it was only the beginning.

Smartphones and Wi-Fi have pushed the envelope even further, connecting users to the world around us while connecting devices to one another. Lights, doorbell cameras, thermostats, dog doors, refrigerators, you name it—entire houses can now connect and interoperate through a Wi-Fi signal with smartphones serving as the universal control. As this network of connected devices continued to expand, it was only a matter of time before cars—and the touchscreens inside—joined the fun.

Pairing the convenience of the touchscreen with the connectivity of the smartphone has proved to be a gamechanger. Drivers can now control their vehicles and harness the far-reaching power of their smartphones right from the center console, helping keep them safe from distracted driving while staying connected on the go.

In the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, for example, the 12.3” center touchscreen syncs with smartphones to control in-vehicle functions and connect to other devices, even miles away. Apps like myQ® Connected Garage and My Mitsubishi Connect use the Outlander’s CarPlay® or Android Auto™ functionality to seamlessly project onto the Outlander’s touchscreen display, enabling you to control your Wi-Fi-compatible garage door opener from the road.

Think of all the times you’ve left home wondering if you closed the garage door, only to turn around and drive home to see that it’s closed. With this feature, you can check the status of the garage to see if it’s open and close it with a single touch from anywhere with a cellular signal. It’s the ultimate peace of mind.

In many homes, the garage door is the busiest point of access. myQ Connected Garage is a safe and convenient way to check the door’s status from your in-vehicle touchscreen at any time. Whether you just left for work, are headed to the grocery store or are on a cross-country adventure, you are now able to stay connected to home without distracted driving. myQ Connected Garage will let you know if the door is open or closed, without you interacting with your phone while driving.

The system is designed to work with the 2022 Outlander, as well as the 2018 and later models of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. Either vehicle will need a My Mitsubishi Connect subscription, which Mitsubishi provides for free for the first two years a vehicle is on the road. Within the garage, Wi-Fi-compatible openers from LiftMaster, Chamberlain and dozens of other brands integrate with myQ Connected Garage. Connect to smart home networks such as Google Assistant™ and Apple HomeKit® with the free myQ app for peace of mind no matter where you are.
