2013 Volvo Cars
Sweden’s Volvo is back with a revised S60 sedan, and products like the S80 Sedan, XC60 and XC90 crossovers as well as the C30 hatchback and C70 coupe are all strong, but have enjoyed varying degrees of success in the marketplace. Volvo’s new owners seem unsure about what direction they want to take the brand in, despite the company’s strongest lineup in years.
While Volvo has been known for boxy, utilitarian station wagons, Volvo no longer offers their signature vehicle, despite an outcry from longtime loyalists. Their XC60 and XC90 crossovers are still competitive in their segments, and the S60 is as good as any German sports sedan, but the brand seems to have an image problem and inadequate marketing budget to get the word out. Innovative safety features have always been a Volvo hallmark, from airbags to side-impact protection to the latest blind spot cameras and pedestrian warning systems. Time will tell if Volvo can translate their leadership in safety into getting consumers to part with their money.
