Clean windows are an important part of having a safe driving experience. Reduced visibility from dirty windshields and windows can increase the risk of an accident, especially during nighttime situations. Although it’s likely you wash your windows and glass each time you wash your car, sometimes you need a quick touch-up in between washes. That’s where auto glass cleaners come in, which are also great to use after a wash.

These products are designed to clean your glass easily and efficiently, leaving no streaks or residue behind. They also have special formulas to help break down dirt, particles, and grime normally associated with everyday driving. Some products will also protect your glass with some form of repellent, helping it stay clean even longer.

Why You Should Trust AutoGuide's Product Reviews

We drive the latest new cars, trucks, and SUVs, but did you also know the team at AutoGuide.com tests tires, waxes, wiper blades, and pressure washers? Before we recommend a product as a top pick in one of our popular product lists, our editors put it to the test. We run through all its features, test the claims that the brand makes about each product, and then give an honest opinion on what we like and don’t like from our personal experience. As experts in all-things automotive, from minivans to sports cars, and from portable jump starters to ceramic coating, we want to make sure you buy the product that’s right for you.

1. Editor's Pick: Stoner Invisible Glass Premium Glass Cleaner

This premium automotive glass cleaner is the most popular item on Amazon under glass care products. The Stoner Invisible Glass is available with a variety of options, including an EZ Grip bottle, and packaged with microfiber cloths. You can also purchase multiple 19-ounce cans at one time to save a little bit of money.

This product offers a no-drip, fine mist spray that sticks to glass and won't run or drip on your dash when you use it. It's formulated to dissolve and remove the thin layer of film that builds up on the interior of your windshields. It's ideal for removing bug splats, smoke haze, bird droppings, salt spray, and road grime and is safe for indoor and outdoor use.

Stoner Invisible Glass is ammonia free and safe to use on tinted windows.

Pros

Foaming action, no-drip fine mist spray, ammonia free, price

Cons

Strong smell, spray nozzle could be problematic

2. Meguiar's Ultimate Glass Cleaner & Water Repellent

We've recently had the opportunity to evaluate Meguiar's Ultimate Glass Cleaner & Water Repellent, a new product for 2024, and came away impressed by how well it works. One of the biggest claimed benefits is a hydrophobic layer of protection it leaves behind and based on our experience, those claims are true. Compared to Meguiar's previous window cleaner we had on our list, this product is much easier to apply, leaving behind no streaks with little effort. Still, when it comes to application, we prefer our top pick.

For now, Meguiar's Ultimate Glass Cleaner & Water Repellent is our runner-up pick because it's still a relatively new product and we haven't spent as much time using it as we have our top recommendation. We'll be sure to re-evaluate in the next three months on whether this product can be considered our favorite.

Pros

Trusted car care brand, hydrophobic protection, anti-hazing formula, dust repellent, safe on tint, easy to apply, no streaks

Cons

Price

Touted as the world's best glass cleaner, Sprayway's product is one of the highest-rated items in its category on Amazon. It's designed to clean glass windows, mirrors, and windshields but can also be used on enamel surfaces, chrome, tile, porcelain, and other hard surfaces. Its powerful formula is designed to dissolve dirt, grease, grit, and grime using a heavy-duty foam that clings to vertical surfaces.

Sprayway's glass cleaner won't leave behind any film and has a nice, fresh scent.

This product comes in a 19-ounce bottle.

Pros

Ammonia free, streak and residue free, foaming action

Cons

Smell may be displeasing to some

What to Look For When Shopping for a Glass Cleaner

For the most part, quality glass cleaners offer very similar features and you may have a tough time differentiating them beyond their price tag. But there are a few things to look for when shopping for one.

First, you want to stay clear of any products that use ammonia or an ingredient that could produce toxic fumes. Ammonia and its fumes can cause certain materials such as plastic, rubber, vinyl, and leather to dry out. And although you're not directly applying glass cleaner to any of those surfaces, drips and accidents happen. In addition, solutions with ammonia will damage any tint you may have on your glass.

Speaking of tinted windows, even if a product says it's ammonia-free, you will want to make sure it's safe to use on tinted windows. You will also want to make sure the solution won't stain your glass.

Although not as important, you'll want to choose a product that's easy to apply whether that's with a spray bottle or an aerosol can. Some products offer a nice, foaming action that's easy to spray on and wipe off, digging deep into any dirt or grime you may have on your windows. Try to avoid glass cleaners that may drip and cause a mess.

Why Can't I Just Use a Household Glass Cleaner?

The reason why you want to avoid household glass cleaners is the same reason we mentioned above: ammonia. Many household glass cleaners use ammonia for cleaning power, which isn't ideal for vehicle use. In addition, your car sees a lot more wear and tear from the environment, which means streaking becomes an issue if you use a household cleaner. Some users also report fogging as an issue if you use a household cleaner on your car's windows.
