If it’s slipped your radar, BMW‘s next generation M3 will be called the M4, and these are some of the very first spy photos of the car.

The new naming convention comes from a plan from BMW to better organize its ever expanding vehicle lineup. From now on, coupes and convertibles will all get even numbered badges, like the Z4 or 6 Series, while sedans will retain their odd numbers. This will also create confusion, however, as the sedan version of this car will likely wear the M3 badge still.

There was some debate that the new M3 could use a V6 engine, but the most recent reports point towards an inline-six, though it could have as many as three turbochargers. A six-speed manual will be offered, although BMW has said they will not offer a stick-shift on the next-gen M5.

As for styling, don’t expect any dramatic changes to the car’s profile, though like the new 3 Series it will gain a more pointed front end. Also look for some slightly more dramatic lines, similar to those we first saw on the 1M Coupe.
