It’s no surprise that Volkswagen is planning several new crossovers for the market, but the German automaker has revealed that its Polo-based compact SUV will be the first one spun off its new MQB platform.

The new crossover will be based on the next-generation Polo model and will rival the likes of the MINI Countryman and Nissan Juke while being similar in size to the Audi Q2. Styling of the new Polo SUV will be based on the Cross Coupe concept (seen above) and we could see it debut as soon as 2014.

Volkswagen R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg also confirmed that the Polo SUV would be adapted for different markets. European variants will be more sophisticated and premium in its offerings while emerging markets may see a more stripped-down, basic variant. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive will be offered.

This is just the first of the crossovers VW has in the works. An Up-based SUV is set to debut in Sao Paulo at the end of the month, while America will be treated to a Passat-based SUV at next year’s Detroit Auto Show.

VW should expedite its launch in India or else will be loosing on a big market share....should price it between 8 to 10.5 lakhs and should maintain the quality interiors.....will be a winner with MQB letting it improve in many aspects.....
